(27 October 1867, Bērzmuiža – 28 March 1943, Riga) was a Latvian chess master and composer of studies.

He tied for 3rd-5th at Riga 1899 (the 1st Baltic Congress, Robert Behting won), took 3rd at Riga 1900 (won by T. Muller), won at Riga 1900/01, shared 1st with Karl Wilhelm Rosenkrantz, W. Sohn and Wilhelm von Stamm at Dorpat (Tartu) 1901 (the 2nd Baltic Congress),1 and tied for 3rd-4th at Reval (Tallinn) 1904 (Bernhard Gregory won).2

In 1902–1910, he was co-editor with Paul Kerkovius of the Baltische Schachblätter.3

After World War I, he took 3rd, behind Hermanis Matisons and Fricis Apšenieks, at Riga 1924 (1st LAT-ch).4 Bētinš played for Latvia in 1st unofficial Chess Olympiad at Paris 1924 (+7 –4 =2), where he took 4th place (team) and tied for 4-7th in Consolation Cup (individual; Karel Hromadka won).5

The Latvian Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5) was named as a tribute to Kārlis Bētiņš, who analyzed it in the early part of the 20th century.6

"Wiener Schachzeitung" slejās parādījās prof. Beckera raksts ar spēcīgu virsrakstu- "Gambita atspēkojums", kurā pierāda "Latviešu gambita" atspēkojumu.

Raksa pamatā ir ņemta Stokholmas olimpiādē spēlēta Trifunoviča - Apsenieks partija. Te nu jāsaka, ka prof. Beckers savās analizēs ir smagi maldījies un viņam palīdzīgs ir bijis Apsenieks, minēto partiju vāji nospēlēdams. Izdarot dažus vājus gājienus, Apsenieks deva iespēju Trifunovičam izvest savu kombināciju un uzvarēt. Zīmīgi, ka prof. Beckers, rakstot šādu svarīgu artiķeli, ir piegājis visai šai lietai tik pavirši, ko pierāda tas, ka viņš vesulu sēriju melno vājos gājienus (9. 10. un 11.) nemaznav ievērojis.

'Latvian gambit' is not refuted!

In the columns of the "Wiener Schachzeitung" prof. Becker article with a strong title- "Gambit's refutation", which proves the refutation of "Latvian gambit".

The rickshaw (meaning weak evidence) is based on the game Trifunovich - Apsenieks played at the Stockholm Olympics. Here it should be said that prof. Becker has been heavily mistaken in his analysis and has been helped by Apsenieks, who has played poorly in the game. By making a few weak moves, Apsenieks gave Trifunovich the chance to take his hand and win. It is significant that prof. Becker, when writing such an important article, has gone so naughtily with this whole thing, as evidenced by the fact that he did not even notice a whole series of black weak moves (9. 10 and 11).
