perfidious: I had the pleasure of watching Shabalov's attack in this game; a few years on, I came across a book of Joe Gallagher's in which he stated that the play through 21.Re5 was home-cooked analysis by Shabalov.

PawnSac: Yes and properly simmered! lol
a titanic struggle by two very fine players. I too watched this one on the overhead demo board.

The first time I met Joel he was just a little kid! I think around 12. It was like.. 1975 or 76, during a team championship tourney in NJ. I was around 1950 at the time and here this skinny little rail of a pre-teen was playing at near my strength. I thought.. sheesh, this twerp will be a GM by the time he's 20! Well, I think it was actually titled 2 years later than my guess (age 22), but all of the stronger players there were saying.. we better keep an eye on this kid!
