Oct-07-05  suenteus po 147: Could this be Lawrence Day playing Bird's Opening?

IMlday: Indeed. If one knows the King's Gambit (1.f4 e5 2.e4!?) then Bird's is totally playable. btw George anglicized his name as Kuprejanov which may make searches easier. One big event he won was the Open at Monaco 1968 that complimented the concurrent super-tournament. We shared 2nd in the '72 Canadian Championship and had a match playoff for an Olympic spot, bragging rights, etc. This was the decisive game. He had beaten me in the tournament so I had to win.
Oct-07-05  suenteus po 147: <IMlday> Thanks for the story and the info on Kuprejanov. A most impressive win on your part. Had you played Bird's Opening much before this game? I'm sure you had, though there are no other examples in the database. I'm a huge advocate for Bird's Opening myself, and have played endless games myself (even winning a few club games, the height of my career). I thought your endgame play was especially nice, picking up all those errant black pawns :)

IMlday: Yes, that's me. It's the final game from a match to determine 2nd place in the 1972 Canadian Zonal and qualiication to the Skopje Canadian Olympic team. If you know King's Gambit then Bird's is a good opening in my opinion.

IMlday: Not a blitz game at all. It was FIDE 4-game match rules, played at 40/150 then 18/60 with no increment and an Arbiter to hold the sealed move (42.Rxb3) envelop. I thought at the time that 43..Nd5 was the losing move since 43..Kf5 44.Kc4 Ke4 45.Rb6 Ng4 46.Re6+ Kf5! 47.Re7 Rf8! and I couldn't find a way forward. He only looked at 46..Kf3? so rejected the line prematurely. I don't know what the computers say.
