Kibitzer's Corner
May-14-05  notyetagm: Lputian wants to activate his bad bishop and does so with 32 ... ♗b5!, exploiting the overworked nature of the White b2-rook. If the rook takes the bishop, then the White queen gets pinned to the White king along the second rank by the Black a1-rook (33 ♖xb5?? ♖a2).

<Anything that is lined up with the king must stay on the line of the king, both to keep lines to the king closed and to break alignments involving the king.> Since the White rook has to stay on the 2nd rank to stop the royal pin ... Ra2, it cannot move along and hence does not defend along the b-file.

May-14-05  notyetagm: Lputian <takes the base of the pawn chain and removes the guard> by playing 49 ... ♖xh2!. Black takes the pawn and White takes back with his rook (49 ... ♖xh2! 50 ♖xh2). <But the h2-pawn was guarding the g3-square and the rook which replaced it cannot perform this defensive task (illusory protection)>. Since the g3-square is no longer defended, Black can play his queen there and get his rook back via a fork (50 ... ♕g3+ and 51 ... ♕xh2), winning a pawn in the process.

May-14-05  notyetagm: My previous two posts show Lputian playing <petites combinations>, first to activate his bad bishop and second to win a pawn. Chess is not all about long combinations.
