Mar-04-15  Howard: This complex ending was one of Portisch's best efforts from the Olympiad. In fact, Inside Chess magazine analyzed it back around 1990.

perfidious: Wonder whether the players in L E Johannessen vs E Moser, 2004 were aware of this game, or its better-known antecedent Yanofsky vs Fischer, 1962. Believe Timman wrote on Portisch-Pritchett in <The Art of Chess Analysis>.
Mar-04-15  Howard: You're right ! Timman did allude to this game in Art of Chess Analysis, when he was analyzing Korchnoi-Karpov, 1978 (Game 21).

In fact, he also referred to a game that Adjoran (sp)won in the 1979 interzonal, which was the same endgame as here. One difference was that in the Portisch game, the losing player had a dark-squared bishop, while with Adjoran the loser's bishop was on the light squares. Timman mentioned that fact, as I recall.

Mar-27-21  nummerzwei: Portisch could also have won with a rook sacrifice, similar to the one that was later played in the game P Nikolic vs Falk Hoffmeyer, 2019, i.e. 63.Kg5 Rc7 64.Rxf7+! Rxf7 65.e6 Kg8!? 66.e7! +- . Note that 66.Kxg6? Rg7+! is only drawn.
