sisyphus: I'm surprised this is the only game in the database where, in response to 8.a3, Black tried a Marshall-type attack (8....d5 etc.). Black was ok till blundering with 31...Be6.

I think Black was more than OK at a certain stage. After 20...Re4 the black pieces look so threatening that one expects white's breakdown within a few moves. It took an exraordinary defence by Suetin to save the game. In hindsight Lukovnikov would have been wise to take the draw that was possible after 27.Kf1: 27...Qd3+ 28.Kg1 Qg6+ etc.

So strong was the black attack that one will automatically search for an improvement somewhere. However, after 23.gxh4! and 24.Qh3! it is difficult to reinforce the attack. Perhaps Black would have done better with 24...h6 (instead of 24...bxc4) to cover g5 and avoid the exchange of his important dark-square bishop.
