Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-12-05  DAL9000: I like this game because it's one of the few GM games I can readily understand-- once White gets his pawn to d6, his entire game is oriented towards protecting it and then ramming it down Black's throat with an eye to promotion. (I also like the game because 30. g3! is very nice-- I love that kind of quiet move.)

Because of this, though, I have a question. How could Black have /stopped/ that pawn from getting to d6? If he couldn't have, what could he have done to get more active play against it?

I guess what I'm asking here is: where did Black go wrong?

Aug-05-25  FM David H. Levin: Dr. Edward Allen suggested 16...Bd7 (which appears to be a novelty), intending 17. Nc7 Nxf3+ 18. Qxf3 Bc6,

when White's queen has no good way to both prevent ...Re2 and protect the b-pawn. So, Black will soon pick up a second pawn to compensate for the exchange that he's about to give up, not to mention his mobile pair of bishops.

Fritz 11 likes this idea but prefers 16...Nxf3+, and if 17. Qxf3, then 17...Bd7. I surmise that one reason is that if White should recapture at f3 with the rook or the pawn, Black's light-square bishop could deploy other than to d7 without having lost a tempo by going there first.
