Sep-28-04  Jesuitic Calvinist: I love this game - bravo, Hector! I play this line as Black myself and this game is a fine illustration of how Black can try to take the initiative in the KGD.

There are a number of very nice points here. In 1997, Hector played this same variation as White against Smyslov and lost a long game. Hector played 8.Nc3, while Berg varied here with 8.Bxf6, which was worse.

Whte may have thought he could avoid disaster with 13.Qd2 intending 13...Qh4+; 14.Qf2, when after 14...Qxf2+; 15.Kxf2,Nxe5 he can probably survive. But perhaps he saw then that instead 15....Nxd4! wins.

Black of course ended up playing a sac on d4 anyway, and the resulting king-hunt is instructive.

Feb-09-05  fasting: yes, hector plays a beautiful kings gambit with back - 2..., Bc5 is nice, besides I'm looking for a counter to K.G. so guess I'm gonna try Bc5 out.
Nov-07-05  notyetagm: White makes 13 of his last 20 moves with his king. That can't be good.

A good promotion of 2 ... ♗c5 against the King's Gambit.

Mar-31-07  bebop1: This is check AND mate, isn't it? Not just check.
Mar-31-07  magilla: <bebop1> yep, 33. ... Qe6 is checkmate (as would be 33. ... Qh5# or 33.... Qf6#). There is a "suggest your correction" link below that can be used for reporting minor errors in notation to help clean up stuff like this.

Mar-31-07  bebop1: <magilla> Thanks for the info, now it's reported.
Nov-03-07  PAWNTOEFOUR: this game was nice!!......i don't know why berg just didn't resign or did he really think he was going to get out of this?

An Englishman: Good Evening: White did well to last as long as he did, given that he gave odds of both Rooks and the Queen Knight.
Mar-11-20  areknames: <A good promotion of 2 ... ♗c5 against the King's Gambit> Indeed. Great stuff, such a typical Hector game.
Feb-19-23  waddayaplay: Berg has played against this line (..Bc5) three times in the database and lost all three.

Maybe that's why he stopped playing the King's Gambit.

The national championship is one of the most important events, at least for those who haven't won it already, so losing like this must have been a disaster.

Berg ended second in the Swedish championship that year, with 9 points (Evgenij Agrest won with 10 points). This was his only loss. Hector ended 11th, with 5.5 points.
