plang: Yusupov is the acknowledged expert in the si deline with 8..Nf6 so Svidler would not have been surprised in the opening. A few months earlier at Biel Grischuk played 18 Bd3 against Gelfand and the game ended in a draw; 18 Bb3 was new. After 20..Ne4?! (20..h6) 21 Nd7! White won a pawn but still needed excellent technique to bring home the full point. 27..Rec8 giving up the e-file was questionable; 27..b5 was an alternative. 31..Bc6?! looks dubious; Svidler offered 31..Re7 32 Rxe7..Kxe7 33 Bxd5..Rxd5 34 Rb3 with a solid White edge. 33..h5? 34 Bxf7 would have ended the game quickly. 36 g4!..Rb5 and only then 37 d5 would have been stronger. A tougher defense would have been 39..Be6 40 Ba4..Rc5 41 b4..Re5 42 Rf8..Rd5 43 d7..Bxd7 44 Bb3..Rd2 45 Rxf7+..Ke5 with the idea of ..Bc6 and White's advantage would have been smaller. Black resigned due to 45 Rxe4 and 46 d7.

A really nice endgame by Svidler.
