Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-09-04  patzer2: Dreev, a specialist in the 4...Bf5 line as Black, pushes too hard as White, overextends his pawns and loses to a player almost 200 rating points below him. This line of the Slav does indeed appear to be a tough nut for White to crack.

Looks like this opening variation might be good for novice and club level players looking for a solid continuation with good counterplay as Black aginst 1. d4.

Jan-09-04  euripides: Does it work as well against the rather more frequent 4 Nc3 ?
Jan-09-04  patzer2: <duripides> <Does it (4...Bf5 in the Queen's Gambit Slav) work as well against the rather more frequent 4 Nc3 ? > It could work by transposition, but Black must be careful to play precisely and be flexible to avoid an inferior variation. One way to reach it, using a popular opening sequences in the Slav is 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e3 Bf5 5. Nf3 a6. Another idea is to reach it via 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e3 a6 5. Nf3 Bf5.

It can also be reached via the English Caro Kahn system via 1. c4 c6 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nc3 d5 4. e3 a6 5. d4 Bf5 along with several other possibilities.

Mar-19-04  kevin86: I think that the four rooks at d1,d8,e1,and e8 make a pretty picture!
