tamar: With Kramnik out, Svidler v Morozevich figures to be a key battle in the upcoming Russian Championship. Here is their game last year.
Nov-09-04  iron maiden: Despite this game, Morozevich still holds an overall plus score against Svidler (three victories to two, although one of the wins was rapid).

tamar: Svidler can beat anyone in an all-out attack counter-attack game. He is only -1 against both Kasparov and Morozevich on this database. If Kramnik was still in the field, Svidler would face the psychological test of playing someone who does not permit him to play his game, and someone who has beaten him 9-3 in decisive games. I like his chances now, as both Kasparov and Morozevich will be the main favorites and could face special preparations by the others.
Nov-10-04  Dave Murray: <tamar> Are you sure Kramnik is out? I thought he was playing, did he change his mind?
Nov-10-04  Dave Murray: Never mind, sorry, I just opened chessbase.com page. I wish Kramnik was playing though.

plang: Earlier in the year in a blindfold game Anand had played 13 c5 against Shirov; 13 b5 was new. 14 b6..Ne6 15 cxd..cxd 16 Nxd5..Bc6 17 Ne3..Nf4 would have given Black excellent play for the pawn. White must have been happy with his position after 18 Be5; as Svidler said regarding this variation that if Black doesn't mate White on the kingside he is left with serious positional weaknesses. Dreev suggested 21..Nf4!? 22 f3..a4! 23 Nc1..Nd2! with an unclear position. 24.. fxe 25 Nxc5..exd 26 Qxd3 would have left White with a solid positional edge but Black's choice to sacrifice a piece gave him no chance to save the game once the queens came off.

Another example showing that Petroffs is not as quiet as its repuation.
