tamar: A quality draw against a rising star of Georgian chess. By avoiding dubious positions during Dubai, Carlsen could pick and choose where he wanted to go all out for victory. 22 f4 is solid, but 22 h5! looks stronger. The idea is 22. h5 fxg5 23 hxg6 ♖f6 (otherwise White plays ♔e2 and sets up ♖h8+ and mate) 24 ♕b1 e5 25 ♘e4! ♖xg6 26 ♘d2 e4 27 ♘xe4! again ♖h6 28 ♖xh6 gxh6 29 ♘g3 ♗f8 30 ♕g6+ ♕g7 31 ♕e6+ ♕f7 32 ♕c8 with a ♕ and ♘ combination and threats against b7, that should win with careful play. Of course this took Fritz 7 several days, and a few prods to find, so Carlsen was wise in a limited time control to take the draw.
Dec-22-05  sucaba: <tamar>This is a marvelous line. But how does it continue after 22. h5 gxh5, where Black has 23. ♕d1 g6, 23. ♖xh5 fxg5 and 23. g6 f5 ?
Dec-22-05  Saruman: <scuaba> after 22.h5 gxh5 23.<g6> looks strong and probably leads to the line that <tamar> gave.
Dec-22-05  sucaba: <Saruman>, I agree that 22. h5 gxh5 23. g6 looks dangerous. But after 23. _ f5 Black can on 24. ♖xh5 attack ♙g6 with 24. _ ♖f8-f6 or on 24. ♕d1 plug the h-file with 24. _ ♗g5 25. ♕xh5 ♗h6.
Dec-22-05  Saruman: <scuaba> after f5 white can play Qd1 instead.
