Jul-10-07  Jesspatrick: Not sure why DeFirmian played 34. Nxf5

I see that White's d-pawn will fall, but that doesn't seem like reason to go down a piece. I'll have to run this one on a chess engine.

plang: 12..Nd7 was new; 12..Bg4 had been played previously in a quickplay game. Carlsen's 13..d5?! was effective against was effective against White's 14 exf?! but after the stronger 14 Ba4! White would have been clearly better after 14..dxc 15 Bxc6..cxd 16 Qxd3..Nc5. With 21..Bf6!? Black gave up a pawn for attacking chances. 33..Nf3?! 34 gxf..Qh4 35 Qxg7+..Kxg7 36 Nxf5+ would have been winning for White. 34 Nxf5?! worked out poorly for White but there was concern about combinations starting with ..Nxg2.

Carlsen after 47 b5?!
:Now Black is winning. Something like 47 f4 would have presented me with a very tough job converting my advantage into the full point. Black must somehow get the king over to the queenside without losing the g-pawn."
