plang: Later on in the tournament Morozovich played the mainline 16 Bb2 against Sasikiran and went on to win; here Ponomariov played the rare 16 Bf1 which had been played once before by Stefansson in game 2 of his match with Bologan in the 2000 World Championship tournament in New Delhi. In that game Black had responded 16..Rc8 and had gone on to win; 16..Qc7 was new. Black was defending well until 28..Nxe4; better was 28..Nh5 29 Qa1..Qc5 30 Bd4..Bxd4 31 Nxd4 with sharp, unclear play. 34 Nd4 would have been very strong winning after 34..Ne5 35 Qf4..Reb6 36 Nxb5..Rxb5 37 Bxe5. A tougher defense would have been 38..Kg7 39 Nd6..Rc6 40 Nxc4..Nb6 41 Nxb6..Rxc3 though White would still have had a clear edge. White exchanged his light-squared bisop so he could concentrate on Black's weakness on f6.
