plang: 14..Rb8 had been played in V.Atlas-H.Olafsson 2002 European Club Cup in Halkidiki where White went on to win; 14..bxa was new. Perhaps 17 Qd2 should have been considered keeping the pressure on the a-pawn. Moves 18-20 indicated that White had little ambition and would have been happy with a repetition as he had little active play. 22..f4 would have been an aggressive alternative as 23 Bxa5..Bg5 would have been very dangerous for White. The rest was a rout. Informant 93 gives White's 30th move as 30 Rxe2 and Karjakin offered the following line as the reason for White's resignation: 32 Qxa3..Bxd5+ 33 Kg4..Qd7+ 34 Kh4..g5+ 35 Kxg5..Qg7+ 36 Kh4..Be6. Robert Byrne's column agreed with the game score on this site - I am guessing that the last few moves were played in time pressure and that the game was so one-sided that White's 30th move may not have been considered of great consequence.
