Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-09-08  Gilmoy: White's Qd2-Be3 battery "prevents" Black from castling short. Black's wacky solution is Kf8-g8-h7 defending h6!

It's not all wasted tempi -- White had to worry about the g5-g4-h5 wing attack, Black's K often goes to h7 in these positions anyways, and after 14..Rf8 announces his intent to pursue the standard f5 expansion, White has to scramble a bit to untangle his own pieces. Black paid two more tempi to "castle by hand", and White used them to accomplish 12.h3 and 16.f4 -- nothing to brag about!

Perhaps White so overrespected the KID pawn rush that he conceded the center to stop it. Black promptly wins some tempi back by kicking White's Q around.

The simplest form of positional gain is space: whoever gets vertical first is likely winning, whoever retreats first is likely losing. Black cleverly swaps off his weak b-pawn, and 29..Rd3 is a flu that White never shakes off. 35..Qa4 37..Nd5 39..c5 relentless squeezing. Black's B isn't "bad", just far away -- once it embarks on its delightful tour to a5, White is stuck triply-defending weak c3.
