Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-17-05  Albertan: 22...Ke6? was a mistake. (Best was 22...Kg8.

The move 24...cxb3?? was an even more horrible.

Shredder 8 found a combination which Van Wely missed (or for some reason Van Wely did not play):

25.Nc7!!+ Ke7 26.Bxe5! (threatening 27.Bd6#) 26...Qb6 27.Bd6+ forces 27...Qxd6 and White would have a decisive advantage.

Feb-17-05  sneaky pete: <Albertan> Black's position looks ready for demolition, but I don't see a win after 25.Nc7+ Ke7 26.Bxe5 fxe5 etc. Both 27.Qxg5+ Bf6 and 27.Rxd7+ Rxd7 28.Qc5+ Kf6 seem insufficient. What have I missed?
Feb-17-05  Troewa: <sneaky pete> In the first variation you offered :

25.Nc7+ Ke7 26.Bxe5 fxe5 27.Qxg5+ Bf6

White would play 28.Qf5 and if 28...Qxc7 then 29.Qh7+ Ke6 30.Bg4#

Feb-17-05  sneaky pete: <Troewa> Thanks. I had seen 28.Qf5 .. (intending 29.Qe6#) but overlooked the other threat 29.Qh7+. One can imagine, when Van Wely saw the clean win after 25.Qe3 .. etc, he didn't bother with messy sacrificial lines.
Feb-18-05  hartkoka: can you tell me, what would white do if black play 9....b4 ? thanks!
Feb-18-05  Albertan: Hartkoka the line Shredder 8 gives for 9...b4 is:
9.. b4 10. Na4 Nxe4 11. Be5 Nf6 12. O-O Nbd7 13. Rc1 Bb7 14. Rxc4 g4 15. Nd2 h5 16. Bxf6 Nxf6 17. Nb3 a5

Shredder suggests White has compensation for the pawn.
