Dec-11-12  Trigonometrist: <Sacrificing the king just to save the queen usually results in a loss.>

Thank you for that. I really just had to see that written somewhere.

Dec-11-12  Nilsson: 25...Kg8 26.Qh7+ Kf7 27.Rg3!

Dec-11-12  Abdel Irada: <<•>Rooked!<•>>

Perhaps it was really the pawn move to follow that she missed, but when Arianne saw White's sacrifice, I expect she resigned on the spot; the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

In any event, Black's unfun begins with

<<•>29. Rxd5†! >

This wins at least a queen and knight for a rook. Black will have to play 29. ...Kc7 and allow 30. Rxd8. This is because of what happens if she takes the rook:

<29. ...exd5??
30. e6#>

In her defense, Arianne was 14 years younger and weaker in 1998 than she is today.

Dec-11-12  Abdel Irada: And I hadn't even realized how young that meant: She was 12 at the time of this game.
Dec-11-12  standardwisdom: Wow! Really nice puzzle. I started playing it from 20. Bxh7+ onwards, and my first thought was that OMG the black king got away.

I wonder if Wimmer saw all the way till e6# before playing Bxh7+. Probably not, but if the black king does get away, black will eventually win, no?

keypusher: Took me longer than it should. I had a hard time "seeing" that the bishop's diagonal was opened by e5-e6.

scormus: Took me longer than it should have too. I was looking for a Q-sac win until I remembered Monday was yesterday
Dec-11-12  pericles of athens: "smokin' Herb"
Dec-11-12  Oxspawn: I suppose it must be
29 Rxd5+
if 29. exd5
30 e6++
if 29. Bd6
30. Rxd6+
If 29. Kc7
30 Rxd8
Dec-11-12  Nightsurfer: ... and Black mess has started with the matrix of the classic Bishop's sacrifice on h7, after <20.Bxh7+! ...> pp. ... - amazing since that sacrifice has worked even though Black King tried to run away ... but Black Majesty did not geed too far! :-D

chrisowen: Decadant I think it is dog in delve at essintial 29.Rxd5+ as black kings covering queens line of sight it book in until turn around knightd7 can in effect be considered worthwhile go building a position amend rook in f3 and h3 i get confused turn around b6 right eyes a4 then bishop sac h7 in dune i target 22...qd7 as a possible defence when white has only plug in rg3 to continue he assualt queen in h5 and rookg3 g7 gives slight advantage in?

chrisowen: Swindle it not on in at she cards once g6 as king gets dined upon ya knightd5 in forestalls the end 29.Rxd5+ king is supplying 29...Kc7 when courting the act from 30.Rxd8 l0 in e6 then bishopf4 e5 e6 mate.
Dec-11-12  kevin86: Easy,if black takes the knight,e6 is #

radtop: Black should have captured the e pawn when he had the chance on move 16.
Dec-11-12  GreenLantern: <radtop: Black should have captured the e pawn when he had the chance on move 16.>

Black was a she.

Dec-11-12  Castleinthesky: I picked a Wimmer!
Dec-11-12  waustad: It wasn't the first thing I tried but didn't take long. Smothering attemots with the knights didn't work, so what else is forcing? Oh yeah grab the knight and it all falls apart.
Dec-11-12  waustad: She was really young during this game. She didn't turn 13 until the end of the year in 1998.
Dec-11-12  mistreaver: White to play, 29, Easy.
Most obvious is 29.Rxd5+ with the following sequence: 29.. exd5 30.e6 mate
29...Kc7 30 Rxd8 and white has won the queen
Dec-11-12  Kikoman: <Rxd5!> and White wins! Kihx3
Dec-11-12  M.Hassan: <chessthomas: In your line B), black should play 28.Kg8>

You are absolutely right. May be White should get a help from e Rook to complete the attack.

Thank you for your comment.

Dec-11-12  bachbeet: Got it. The rook sac really gives white a big advantage with either the Q capture or mate with the pawn.
Dec-14-12  Abdel Irada: <GreenLantern: <radtop: Black should have captured the e pawn when he had the chance on move 16.>

Black was a she.>

And how!

Dec-14-12  dehanne: Anyone remember Gormallygate?
