Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-09-06  Runemaster: Black was on top right out of the opening. Then he was able to play on both sides of the board.
Aug-09-06  Dr. Funkenstein: I hadn't seen a Morra Gambit where Black allows white to recapture on d4. It thought the way to decline the gambit was to play d3 to misplace a white piece. However, with ...a6 and ...d5 it looks like the game transposes into the advance variation of the french defense, though there is probably a subtle difference or two that I'm not able to recognize
Aug-10-06  Runemaster: <Dr. Funk> Yes, Black ended up with a sort of advance French. But it's a better one than usual because he was able to get the c8 bishop outside the pawn chain before playing ...e6.

I had never seen this way of declining the Morra, either. The way the game went suggests that White didn't handle it well with 5.e5 for the reason I set out above.

Maybe White has to accept the isolated queen pawn and play 5.exd5 or 5.Nc3. Both of those at least give a more open sort of game such as White presumably wanted to play when he selected the Morra, as opposed to the more closed French-style position he got in the game.
