Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-16-06  notyetagm: What a tactical sequence by Li Chao, 49 ♖d8+! ♔h7 50 ♖g7+!!.

49 ♖d8+! exploits the tactical point that the Black d2-rook is tied to the second rank <DEFENDING> the loose Black e2-queen (49 ... ♖xd8? 50 ♕xe2).

Then comes the thunderbolt 50 ♖g7+!!, a tremendous <DECOY> which also exploits the <PIN> of the Black f5-knight to the Black h7-king along the b1-h7 diagonal. This incredible move also involves the <CLEARANCE> tactic since it vacates the g2-square for the White e4-queen for the 51 ♕g2+ follow-up.

50 ♖g7+!! is one of the best <DECOYS> I have ever seen played in a real game.

Oct-16-06  shortsight: I thought it is anti caro-cann setup by white, but it tranposed into scandinavian.
Oct-17-06  Atking: Well Black wasn't bad after the opening. Why not a normal move like as 32. ...hxg5 If 33.Bf2 Qf4 34.QxQf4 gxQf4 35.Rc4 Nd4 with Nc6 It looks draw better Black. I think Hao was chocked of his lost in the previous round. He could not conclud a terrific attack.
Aug-07-08  notyetagm: Li Chao, here playing a _STUPENDOUS_ combination to defeat the very strong Wang Hao at the World Junior Championship (2006), is now leading the World Junior Championship (2008) with a tremendous 5.5/6(!) after six rounds.
Aug-07-08  shr0pshire: That was a great combination. Very nice! Well done.
Aug-08-08  whiteshark: <Atking: Well Black wasn't bad after the opening. Why not a normal move like as 32. ...hxg5 If 33.Bf2 Qf4 34.QxQf4 gxQf4 35.Rc4 Nd4 with Nc6 It looks draw better Black.>

Position after your suggested line to <35...Nd4>:

Now after <36.Bxd4 Rxd4 37.Ree4>

it looks indeed drawish, both <37...Rxc4 38.Rxe4 Rd5 39.Kf2 Rxe4 40.Rxf4>

and <37...Rd1+ 38.Kh2 R1d5 39.Rxf4 Rxe5>

Jan-18-13  ekw: It's a transposition into the QGD, Semi-Tarrasch. ECO code: D42. Li Chao had pretty much nothing out of the opening, but kept afloat. Perhaps 26...Rb3 to get something going. It was like a soccer (sorry, football) game where nobody even has a shot at the goal, until 48...Qe2?? when it was over in a tactic.
Jun-24-13  notyetagm: Li Chao vs Wang Hao, 2006

Game Collection: GC: COMBINATIONEN!

Dec-22-15  bachiller: 49.? White to play.

That would make a good POTD.

Sep-24-22  tibone: The position after 48... Rxd3 (instead of the game move 48...Qe2) is unclear (at least for me). The game could have continued like this:

49. Qxd3 Rc8 50. Rg5 (50. Qd7? Rg8! with equality)

50... Qh7!

(50...Qh6? 51. Qd1! Ng7 (51... Qf8 52. Qh5+ Nh6 (52... Qh6 53. Rxf5 +-) 53. Bc5 with a winning position for white) 52. Qd7

a) 52...Rc2 53. Qd8+ Kh7 54. Qd3+ followed by 55. Qxc2 or

b) 52... Rc4 in the same way 53. Qd8+ Kh7 54. Qd3+ followed by 55. Qxc2 )

Aug-28-23  tibone: I found an amazing variation:
48...Nxh4 49. Rh3 Rxf2 50. Rxh4 Rxg2+ 51. Kxg2 Rc2+! 52. Kf1 Rc1+ 53. Kf2 Rc2+ 54. Ke3! Re2+ 55. Kd3 +- 55...Rxe4 56. Rxh5+ Kg7 57. Kxe4
Aug-30-23  tibone: Now I understand that the position after 48... Rxd3 49. Qxd3 Rc8 50. Rg5 Qh7 and then 51. Qd7 would be hopeless for Black.
