Mar-22-07  spidi: ahh 16. Q e4g4 and Carlsen would win this game.
Mar-22-07  Grega: Carlsen spoiled very fine game with careless move. That's pitty. I observed the game and Leko's play in this tournament isn't convincing. I wonder when his confidence will increase?
Mar-22-07  TheGladiator: Missing Qg4 is really strange, but seeing Leko totally lost after 16 moves as white is also a rare sight! Utterly crazy stuff between ("boring") Leko and Magnus "the drawster" today (Magnus is +0 -2 =8 so far, despite some really crazy games...)

14... Qd8 would've been one of the most surprising moves I've seen in a long time, black being R+N down, with only one developed piece (Bf5) ... What a crazy position, when returning the queen to its initial position seems deadly!

Mar-23-07  Atking: <TheGladiator:(Magnus is +0 -2 =8 so far, despite some really crazy games...)> Sure ! He still needs confidence in this new type (For him) of tournament. More he will realize that he could see as well as the best players in the world more he will be dangerous. This game shows that one 16 years old is able to crush in nearly 20 moves one of most solid player in the world (With Black!)... Agree Carlsen will go far !
Mar-23-07  notyetagm: From www.amberchess.com:

<The Hungarian grandmaster could have limited the damage with 15.Ke2 exd5 16.Qg3 and the position should be about equal. After 15.Nb6+ as he played, Carlsen could have finished the job with 16…Qg4+ and White will lose his queen after 17.Kf2 Qh4+ 18.Ke2 Bg4+ 19.Kd2 Bb4+. >

Just like Dr. Lasker said, when you see a good move (16 ... ♕e4x♖h1), look to see if you can find a better won (16 ... ♕e4-g4+! ). This oversight by Magnus, turning a winning position into an equal one, is a great example of Dr. Lasker's saying.

Mar-23-07  TheGladiator: It must be said, though, that Leko has played more solid moves than the g4?!/!? of this game...
Mar-23-07  Progman: Correct Gladiator! It opened up the floodgates with black's Nxe5 and e6.
Mar-23-07  TheGladiator: Still, g4 might be ok for white, if he takes the bishop instead of capturing on e5...
Mar-23-07  Progman: Leko's g4 is nevertheless questionable from a tactical point of view. Slomarco mentioned that Leko played "out of character" - I think he has a point. It was bound to turn sharp, aggressive chess after that g4 move, i.e. playing chess on Carlsen's premises. Haven't checked the line if he'd taken the bishop instead - will do so.
Mar-23-07  aragorn69: <Gladiator> Any analysis after the indeed amazing 14.-Qd8 ???
Mar-23-07  Progman: What if Leko had played Bd3 instead of Qe1?
Mar-23-07  slomarko: <<Gladiator> Any analysis after the indeed amazing 14.-Qd8 ???> The analysis is: game over.
Mar-28-07  sharkbenjamin: Draw! Fighting draws will always be the among the best games played.
Mar-30-07  geezerbloke: nice game, shocking miss. It amuses me that someone can see the sac but not Qd8 which would appear to win leaving the missing of Qg4+, whilst equally eyebrow raising, irrelevent.

14...Qd8
15 Kc3(cant see where else it can go, so i guess as bad as this looks its preferable.) Qxd5 16 Bc4 Qxe5+
17. Kb3 (again same problem trying to avoid the pin) Qe4

its terminal as slomarko says the analysis game over

Another amazing game by Carlsen.

Playing with the Black pieces no less, he gets a winning position in less than 20 moves against the super-solid Leko.

Unbelievable.
