Feb-26-09  KingG: Since the main advantage of being a tempo up on the Advance French is to be able to develop the bishop to d3 without gambitting any pawns, it's a bit surprising White missed the ...Nb4 idea. Once you get the bishop to d3 you would want to keep it at all costs. Instead, 8.Bc2 looks ok to me.
Feb-26-09  MaxxLange: Would 8. a3 to prepare Qe2 have been OK? I have no idea if White normally plays a3 in the Advance, and there goes the extra tempo, but that's what it's for, right? To use it.
Feb-26-09  WhiteRook48: bad pun, but "Nip it in the bud"
Feb-27-09  KingG: <MaxxLange> White does often play a3 in the Advance French, with the idea of b4. However, in this position, maybe Black can get away with taking the pawn after 8.a3 cxd4 9.cxd4 Nxd4, since I don't think a3 makes much difference compared to the main-line Milner-Barry Gambit(1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Qb6 6.Bd3 cxd4 7.cxd4 Bd7 8.O-O Nxd4 9.Nxd4 Qxd4). That makes me think that maybe 8.Re1 might be good, since if Black takes the pawn, White will be better developped than usual in this position. And if Black plays the ...Nb4 idea, then White can simply retreat his bishop to f1, and then kick the knight away with a3.
Mar-08-09  furrer: Should the commentary to 5... e6 be: Advance French instead of Exchange French?

I agree with King G, but I also think a3 instead of Bd3 is interesting.

Dec-20-16  RookFile: White might have played as Nimzo did.
Nimzo's idea was dxc5 and b4 and then overprotect e5

Nimzowitsch vs Salwe, 1911

Dec-20-16  RookFile: So, this would mean 8. dxc5 rather than 8. Qe2
