Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-04-09  KingG: A GM gets outplayed in an endgame by a player 200 points lower rated than him.

I don't understand why White didn't play the obvious 27.gxf5 Bxf5 28.b3. If anyone is then going to win the endgame, then surely it's White with his two bishops.

After 27.g5 Nxa4, then surely the best move would have been to open up the position for the bishops with 28.f3. The position is then probably a draw, but with the two bishops on an open board anything could still happen. Certainly, even a pawn down I can't imagine White losing this.

To then give up the his dark squared bishop a few moves later looks very suspicious to me. If you are going to exchange one of your bishops, then surely it would be the light-squared on in order to get bishops of opposite colour. Again, 30.f3 made more sense, to open up the position.

24...c4! was a nice shot at the end, but it seems to me to be a very poorly played endgame for a grandmaster.

Feb-14-09  ChesterTheJester: That's what Karl told Cherniaev after he loudly accused him of cheating - incredibly unprofessional behaviour from an experienced GM.
Feb-14-09  KingG: <That's what Karl told Cherniaev after he loudly accused him of cheating >

Cherniaev always struck me as being very unfriendly, but I didn't think he was the kind of person to stoop so low as to accuse someone of cheating for no reason. The rating difference was only about 200 points, so it's not like it's unthinkable that he could lose. In my opinion anyone who openly accuses someone of cheating with nothing to back it up should be kicked out of the tournament.

Feb-16-09  ChesterTheJester: When Cherniaev lost to Sam Franklin at the 2008 Surrey Open (500 point difference - Sam has since gone up about 150) he was very gracious - it was therefore a bit of a shock that he'd stoop so low after losing against someone so good!
Apr-08-09  Augalv: <In my opinion anyone who openly accuses someone of cheating with nothing to back it up should be kicked out of the tournament.>

Not only should anyone who accuses someone of cheating without evidence be kicked out of a tournament, but they should be temporarily banned, or have rating points removed from them.

I don't understand why Fide never does anything about these unsubstantiated accusations letting these people get away with it.

May-01-11  Tigranny: Couldn't Cherniaev only win had he kept his bishops and not played 30.Bxc5??+?
