  keypusher: 28....Rxf2 29. Ng4 Rf7 30. Ne5 Rf2 31. Nd7 Re8 32. Bg6 -- is that right?
May-16-09  Jim Bartle: Maybe he thinks about chess on the football field.

keypusher: I like this game, though Hess was certainly the beneficiary of a strange error, 43....Rc6 after Shulman had seemingly successfully resisted Hess' pressure.

These transgenerational comparisons are generally silly, but in his tactical sharpness, his lack of focus on the opening, his rough and ready style, and his relentlessness Hess reminds me a little bit of Emanuel Lasker.

May-16-09  wanabe2000: <keypusher> Not sure if you have the position. After 28...Rxf2 29.Ng4 Rf7 30.Ne5 Rf2 31.Nd7? Rxd7! The rook is on b7 not b8. How does a high school guy with football on his mind play like a GM? Great game, young R. Hess.
May-16-09  Atking: Seems Black was frustrated by the poor result of his middle game. indeed a good opening from black side. Therefore I don't understand 14...h6 (?) At first sight Black's attack is leading one tempo on Queen side. Crudely 14...a5 15.g4 (15.h6 g6) 15...a4 16.g5 b4 then Rfb8 ~b3 may be terrific. Else I like 14...Rfb8 <Jim Bartle: Maybe he thinks about chess on the football field.> I like this one. I was just thinking the opposite. Hess is a fighter and plays chess as he is on football field.

keypusher: <wanabe2000> you're exactly correct, I had the rook on b8, not b7.

Shredder thinks white is better after 28....Rxf2 29. Ng4 Rf8?! 30. Rg1 and predicts a draw by repetition after 29....Rf7 30. Ne5 Rf6 31. Ng4, etc.
