Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-05-13  blade2012: This is a win for White, the result is wrong
Jan-05-13  fokers13: Indeed.

I wonder why black played 56..Rg1? even if he somehow won the central pawns for the c one i doubt he could ever promote the h-one and in the case of the game he just ouright drops it.

Jan-05-13  ASchultz: I think it's close to zugzwang for Black there.

Fritz gives ...c5 a bit earlier to escape this, but still, impressive to visualize the possibility of this.

Definitely a less dry R&P endgame than seems at first glance.

Jan-06-13  luzhin: It's understandable that Black went for activity with 56...Rg1. If he tries to hold steady he loses anyway, for example: 56...Ke6 57.Rh7 Kd6 58.e5+ Ke6 59.Kc5 Kf5 60.Rf7+ Ke6 61.Rc7 wins. Great determination by Jones against stubborn defence. In particular the tempting 33.Ra8 threatening various mates, fails to 33...Qg1+ 34.Kd2 Qb1! 35.Rxb8+ Qxb8 36.Nxd7 Qb2+ 37.Ke3 Qd4+!
Jan-06-13  Old Wolf: Jones actually did win this game; result is recorded wrongly in Chessgames.
Jan-09-13  Ulhumbrus: 9 Bxc6?! concedes the biahop pair and Black's queen side pawns. although broken, can support a knight on d5.

11 Rg1 threatens g4 and gives up the right to castle on the king side. This suggests that black's queen's bishop has done its work on h3 and that it is time to move it by eg 11...Bg4 or 11...Be6
