Jan-21-14  torreAC: Nice !!
Jan-21-14  VinnyRoo2002: Is this a transposition to the ruy Lopez?
Jan-21-14  ChessMan94: Wow, talk about smothering the King.
Jan-21-14  sevenseaman: <31...Qxa7> is altogether pointless. Pentala's sharp attack on the Black K did not leave Naka this luxury.
Jan-21-14  luzhin: Naka clearly missed 30.Nh5!! The best defence seems to be 30...Qxa7 31.Nf6+ Kh8 32.Bxf8 Ne3! but after 33.Bxd6 Ra8 34.fxe3 Qa1 35.Qxa1+ Rxa1+ 36.Kh2 the ending is completely won for White.
Jan-21-14  SirRuthless: Wow Naka can't see anything in this event. Still probably should be -4 at this point. -2 through 8/11 isn't the end of the world.
Jan-21-14  FamilyTree: <Is this a transposition to the ruy Lopez?>

It looks like a Breyer. 30.Nh5! is a nice shot.

Jan-21-14  capafischer1: Nakamura has lost 15.5 rating points so far. Great middle game play by harikrishna
Jan-21-14  Mudphudder: Naka is still tilting from his loss to van wely. LOL
Jan-21-14  ChessYouGood: Simple, clear tactics by an energetic Harikrishna. Nakamura tried his very best, but is simply confounded by such direct play. 32...f5 is a joke. Good to see that Nakamura's live rating is further corrected to reflect a more realistic ranking of the top players.
Jan-21-14  Jason Frost: <ChessYouGood: Simple, clear tactics by an energetic Harikrishna. Nakamura tried his very best, but is simply confounded by such direct play. 32...f5 is a joke. Good to see kibitzers still evaluate players on the basis of whatever tournament they are watching and forget all previous events. And not sure how 32...f5 is a joke? The game is completely over after 30. Nh5 and 32...f5 is as good defense as any in an already hopeless position.

Jan-21-14  parisattack: If the point is that Naka moved up a little too quickly, then well taken.

There is natural backing-and-filling for younger players. Caruna hit 2800, fell back sharply, now moving up again.

Jan-22-14  GauraNitai: <Jason Frost>: 32...f5 is a joke. 32...f6 offers a much better defence as it prevents an immediate Ng5. Then 33.Nxf6+ Kf7 34.Ng5+ Ke7 35.Bf8+ followed by 36.Ne6 seals black's fate, but is a stretch compared to 32...f5 where Ng5 leaves Black instantly helpless.
Jan-22-14  whiteshark: "The expected never happens; it is the unexpected always."

-- John Maynard Keynes

Jan-22-14  abuzic: 32...f6 does not change the fate of the game,

after 33.Nxf6+ Kf7 34.Ng5+ Ke7 35.Bf8+ Kd8 36.Nxh7+ Qxh7 37.Qxh7 Rxf8 38.Qb7 which should win for white

But 35.Ne6! threat Bh8 folloewed by Qg7# stronger than 35.Bf8+:

if 35...Nd2 36.Bf8+ Kxf6 37.Qh4+ g5 <37...Kf7 38.Qxh7+ Ke8 39.Qxa7> 38.Qh6+ Kf7 39.Qxh7+ Ke8 <39...Kf6 40.Qf5#> 40.Qxa7

Jan-22-14  Mudphudder: Parisattack - agreed, the natural variability in rating for young players is expected. This is also the case with Wesley So and is seen in this tournament as well.
Jan-22-14  KingchecksQueen: HN dream of becoming FWCC is fading, fading fast.
Jan-22-14  csmath: 3. ...Nd7

[avoiding transfer to positional game.]

5. Bd3

[sideline rarely played on the top level, Caruana vs Topalov, 2012 ]

After 10 moves we have a transposition into hybrid of Breyer/Steinitz Ruy Lopez. Therefore Harikrishna achieved his goal of steering the game into positional battle. White position is favorable.

13. d5

[again, Harikrishna steers the game into more positional direction while planning kingside attack.]

13. ...g6?!

[Nakamura wants to prevent Nf5. I am not a big fan of weakening castling in this manner. This weakness will prove fatal in the end.]

15. ...c4

[opening of b-file will not be beneficial to black although it is not easy to give a good advice here to black.]

17. ...Qc7?!

[dubious sacrifice of pawn to diffuse white's advantage will backfire.

17. ...Qa5
18. Rb4! Rec8

looks more solid though white retains clear advantage with 19. Nd2]

19. ...Na3?

[that was Nakamura's plan but it is not a good plan since black has no compensation for a pawn and his bishops are ineffective. Exchanging the most active minor piece is a dubious idea.]

20. Rb3

[20. Rb4 Nxc2, 21. Qxc2 Reb8, 22. Be3 Ba6, 23. Rxb8 Rxb8, 24. Ra1 Qc4 and after queen exchange white would still have a lot of technical problems to convert the game into a win. Harikrishna's move is more natural.]

21. ...Nd7?!

[this knight is going nowhere while black has serious problems activating his bishops.]

26. ...Qc8

[Sad move but there is nothing better since 26. ...Rb7, 27. Rxb7 Qxb7, 28. c4! Qc7, 29. Nd2 once again paralyzes black bishops.]

28. Qc1

[foxy move underlining the weakness of black kingside. It is interesting how quick the game will now resolve as Nakamura disregard white's attack.]

29....Qc4??

[Losing move, 29. ...Ra8, 30. Rxa8 Qxa8, 31. Bxf8 Qxf8 and white has a long way to try to win the game with pawn up. Nakamura has no patience for that and simply disregards king safety.]

30. Nh5!

[This seals the game, very nice although typical attack in closed Ruy Lopez variations. White attack is too fast and knight cannot be taken, for example: 30. ...gxh5, 31. Qg5 Kh8, 32. Qf6+ with mate]

31. ...Qxa7

[Once again knight cannot be taken because of Qg5 with a mate in a few moves]

======

Such an easy game in which Harikrishna simply steered the game into positional and waited for Nakamura to make impatient moves which he duly did.

Very weak display of Nakamura in this year Wijk An Zee.

Jan-22-14  Marmot PFL: Nakamura will be 27 this year, not a younger player anymore in the same sense as Caruana, So or Giri. In a youtube vid I saw a while ago he blames attending college for a few years for slowing his development as a player.
Jan-22-14  SirRuthless: <MarmotPFL> And your point is?
Jan-22-14  csmath: In this particular game I see the following weaknesses in Nakamura's play:

1. He is not well prepared in the openings.

2. He wants to play tactical at any cost even while choosing inferior openings to get there.

3. When the opening does not go his way he loses patience.

4. He disregards safety of his king assuming that his opponent is not going to be as astute in the attack as he is. [This of course could be just an oversight in this game but I do have this impression of him in many other games.]

This is all old stuff for Naka, old weaknesses which were not remediated in the past. He is a tremendous talent but these weaknesses are preventing him from reaching the very top. As an attacker he is second to none but he has no ability to adapt to inferior game and is impatient in defence when such a game happens.

Most of this has more to do with his personality than with his development as a chess player.

Jan-22-14  SirRuthless: "no ability to adapt to an inferior game" Really csmath? Ar you really going to put an absolute statement out there like that based on this event? I appreciated you actual game analysis but that statement reeks of personal bias. Hikaru is well known for his tenacity in bad positions. he is simply not playing well right now and probably should have a worse score than he does. Only his tenacity is keeping him on -2 through 8 rounds and not -4 or -5. Anyone objective can see that he has systemic weaknesses but your statement is simply overstated and frankly, bizzare.

Funny, when you're Magnus thats a plus!!!

I guess Jason already said it best:

<Jason Frost:

Jan-22-14  csmath: @SirRuthless:

Well, everything is relative to the strength of a player, of course. From point of view of a lesser player than Nakamura is he is strong in every aspect of the game. However, my impression is that when he is put in a stranglehold (as in this game) where no active game is available he plays rather weak chess (compared to his overall strength). Of course, this tournament is a debacle for him and I am sure he can play better.

I am not biased against Nakamura, at least I do not feel that way.

perfidious: Nakamura's loss to v Wely is an object lesson in what can happen to even a top grandmaster when that player goes in for complications which are unjustified by the position, rather than switching to defence for a time.
