  GrahamClayton: As well as writing the column for the English Mechanic, Pierce also organised six correspondence tournaments under the auspices of the English Mechanic between 1882 and 1892.

Pierce and his brother William Timbrell Pierce also developed and analysed the Pierce Gambit in the Vienna Game.
