MissScarlett: <H.W Hawks was a chess enthusiast, having been educated in his early school days in Russia. He became chess editor for the Newcastle Weekly Examiner 1884, the Newcastle Weekly Courant 1894-1901, and the Newcastle Evening Chronicle 1930-1941.>

Nov-30-22  DataFly: Henry William Hawks (25 August 1864 – 15 October 1955).

He was born in Walker, Northumberland and died in Newcastle. I can't find any evidence that he was educated in Russia at any stage. It seems very unlikely.

  MissScarlett: <It seems very unlikely.>

Particularities have a habit of overcoming improbabilities. If he was educated in Russia, the likeliest explanation is that his father had business interests in that country. What evidence would you expect to find in that regard?

Dec-01-22  DataFly: Although Henry William Hawks can be found in all the censuses from 1871 to 1911, his father is missing from 1871, 1881 and 1891; reappearing in the household in 1901 and 1911 and giving his occupation as "retired engineer". I suppose he could have been working abroad and some British engineers of the time worked on Russian railway projects.

MissScarlett: The Brits invented Russia. Just don’t tell them I said so.
