Alien Math: various notes: Ancient Receipt Proves Egyptian Taxes Were Worse Than Yours

A recently translated ancient Egyptian tax receipt shows a bill that is (literally) heavier than any American taxpayer will pay this year — more than 220 lbs. (100 kilograms) of coins.

Written in Greek on a piece of pottery, the receipt states that a person (the name is unreadable) and his friends paid a land-transfer tax that came to 75 "talents" (a unit of currency), with a 15-talent charge added on. The tax was paid in coins and was delivered to a public bank in a city called Diospolis Magna (also known as Luxor or Thebes).

One talent equaled 6,000 drachma, so 90 talents totaled 540,000 drachma, researchers say. For comparison, an unskilled worker at that time would have made only about 18,000 drachmaa year said Catharine Lorber, an independent scholar who has published numerous journal articleson Egyptian coins.

Alien Math: New wildfires raise alarms across Alaska
June 24, 2015

A situation report from the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center said 40 new fires were burning Wednesday and more than 400,000 acres had burned so far this season in Alaska.

Alien Math: 3.1 million acres have burned in Alaska this year
Poor air quality suffocates region

There were 152 new fires in a single weekend in late June, according to Alaska Wildland Fire Information, a website operated on behalf of several state agencies including the Alaska Division of Forestry and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Though lightning caused some of the blazes, many were started by people, the site reported. On a Saturday, for example, humans caused 17 of 67 new fires reported to the coordination center.

Strange, I've always thought of Alaska as the huge, cold, untamed land, with snow and fresh air everywhere...

Alien Math: Adobe fixed one of these vulnerabilities last week but another two zero-days remain unaddressed. Both CVE-2015-5122 and CVE-2015-5123 present a critical code injection risk on Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems.

Patches are promised later this week (possibly as early as Tuesday) but Mozilla has decided to act proactively ahead of their release.

"All versions of Adobe’s Flash Player plugin are currently deactivated by default, until Adobe releases an updated version to address known critical security issues," Mozilla explains on a support page.

Mark Schmidt, head of the Firefox support team at Mozilla, heralded the Flash lockdown on Twitter before other Mozilla sources clarified that the move is likely to be a temporary restriction pending patching rather than a permanent sanction against the frequently abused Flash technology.

Also remind to check the Java version in every browser, many Java type can be installed with different browsers using different versions,

Include that Java can be enabled in one browser and disabled in another.

Alien Math: Notes from Alaska by Julia O'Malley

"In Alaska, nobody really cares if you went to Harvard, but if your grandmother was buried here, you should say so because it gives you cred. I think this is because there are only 700,000 people in this state and a whole lot of dangerous country, animals and weather.

People from very different backgrounds tend to find themselves relying on each other, so we care most about stuff like whether you are the type to carry a tow strap in your truck and would be willing to pull us out of a ditch in a snowstorm. Politics come way second. Our loyalty to Denali over McKinley is driven by the same impulse."

Domdaniel: <Alien Math> I adored Carrie Fisher - for her writing and her acting. So sorry I never met her. And now both Carrie and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, die within a couple of days.

Too many deaths in 2016: including two of my favorite musical artists, David Bowie and Leonard Cohen.

I didn't meet them either. I saw Cohen play twice in the later years, 2008-10. But I first *wanted* to see him in the 1970s. I was too young when he played Ireland in 1974, and I couldn't get away from school. But two years later I had a ticket - and then could not go as I was ill.

I never saw Bowie. Sometime around 1990 he played a 'secret' gig in a tiny venue - a bar - in Dublin. Access was very limited. I heard about it in advance and was going to go ... then I thought of a friend of mine, a much more dedicated Bowie fan. He had been having a difficult time in his life, and I felt that seeing Bowie would do him good. So I let him go instead of me.

So it goes. I'm lucky to have met many of the writers and artists I admire. But it is not a competition.

Have a good 2017.

Domdaniel: BTW, <AM> - "The Curve of the Earth", a sci-fi novel by the English writer Simon Morden, is mostly set in Alaska. You might find that interesting.

But he's a good writer anyway. This book is 4th in his Metrozone series, about a Russian genius, Petrovich, in London and later in Ireland, after a nuclear war in which Petersburg and Tokyo were devastated, and the USA has been taken over by fundamentalist Christians (aka 'xtians').
