 | | technical draw: Howdy, ChessWriter, um, I don't understand your name. You say you are ChessWriter but you have been here almost 5 years and haven't written a thing! Anyway I'm glad to see your forum is open so maybe you can write something. |

 | | ChessWriter: Technical Draw, Hmmm I'm not sure how this forum thing works! Anyway, hopefully this will get to you, somehow. I'm the author of "Engaging Pieces: Interviews and Prose for the Chess Fan," and I sometimes write book reviews for Chess Life. I don't write much anymore, because I'm focusing on improving. Maybe someday I'll write a memoir about my success or failure. I became a paying member of cg.com a few weeks ago. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Hello there! I'm a retired chess writer of sorts myself, but only on a local level. I spent twenty years as Editor, Games Editor, and tournament reporter for <Michigan Chess> before finally coming to my senses. I even had a couple of small tournament reports published in <Chess Life>, but then, nobody else wanted to do it. I've found that forum activity around here comes from two sources. Either you invade everyone else's forums and set up a network, or you say something really controversial. Proclaiming that Karpov would have clobbered Fischer in 1975 or that Morphy was not the greatest player of all time will get you plenty of attention. Civil debate is a bit harder.
The worst thing about setting yourself up as a ChessWriter is that everyone who thinks they can write will afflict you with examples of their work and expect to be on the road to fame and fortune.
I'm beyond such expectations, but since I have just as much ego about the stuff I used to write you are going to get afflicted anyway. Well, if you bother clicking on the link, that is: http://www.michess.org/archives/art... |

 | | ChessWriter: phony, I took the bait during a bout of procrastination at work. Your two samples are not bad, and they use correct punctuation. Most of the time I can dismiss a wanna-be after reading a few sentences of poor comma usage. You're right: it's not worth the time to edit a state mag, although some like it like Mark Donlon here in MA. I'm still a bit confused about how my posts link to the main page, and how you've been able to reply specifically to me. I'm sure I'll learn in time. My kibitzing here will hopefully quench any thirst for chess blog writing...ha. I forgot to mention that I'm also editing a new collection of chess fiction for Mongoose Press, the new chess book publisher in MA. It should come out sometime later this year. The stories, all by professional writers, are fantastic. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Clicking on a kibitzer's name at the beginning of their post will take you to that member's page. If they are a premium member, they have the option to set up a forum in which messages may be posted. I found your forum while browsing the "chessforums" link. "Not bad" is about the best I can expect, as I've never had the discipline or desire to be a serious writer (in both senses of the word!). I was looking at some information about <Engaging Pieces>, and noticed it had an eight-page bibliography of chess fiction. Given the title of your next book, this sounds like a speciality. Are these going to be newer works, or will old classics (Lord Dunsany comes to mind) be included as well? |

 | | ChessWriter: The bibliography lists all chess novels and anthologies from 1933 to 2007. I picked that year, because that's the year Nabokov's The Defense was written. My list is pretty darn complete. If you want a biblio that also includes individual short stories, then you'll have to wait for Mark Taylor's book-length biblio, to hopefully be published within the next few years. Taylor is writing a foreword to the anthology. |
