<Isn't that a contradiction?>

No, it's not. For instance there are players who are really good at long passes, for instance crossing the ball to the other flank with precision. There are other abilities that you need in such cases, like making good judgement calls in which player to pass the ball to for instance.

I can give you an example: David Beckham was exceptionally good at passing the ball accurately, long passes with precision, even though he did not have superior technical skills (he was not particularly good at dribbling the ball for instance).

For instance, Luis Suarez is better technically than Beckham was, but if compared to Beckham I would say his passing skills are inferior.

I don't think anyone misses him
(except perhaps some other bullies here on CG, one particular comes to mind...)

Rivaldo was a terrific player. I remember he scored lots of goals in the World Cup that took place in Korea/Japan. Brilliant player.

A player like Rivaldo was of course better than those three British stooges combined :)

HAHAHA
Ignore list is a blessing..No roaches allowed..Poor Nako have to deal with..

He actually respect him. Another world another Island, can't waste your time..Rugbyboy went to Messimania as well..I wonder what those guys will say about Messi's fumble..I warned before about it. The third fumble in WC. And I don't meant about the title, just play great without all that support. The bullie can't wait for the midget starts making lots of goals against Levante, Elchie ans Saragoza. Or Schalke 404.lol

Enjoy those numbers..

Pele - Messi
Official games

Messi 525 - 401 goals(0,76 average)
Pele 812 - 757 goals (0,93 average)

!!!

National team

Messi 100 games - 46 goals (0,46 avg)
Pele 115 games - 95 goals (0,82 avg)

LOL

Pele 4 WC, played <great> in 2, <14 games 12 goals>.

Messi 3 WCs played great in zero, <15 games 5 goals>

snif snif

Numbers are overwhelming . Case closed , right?

Go Keane!

Karposian: <KKDEREK> Your statistical comparison between Pele and Messi say it all. There really is no contest. Those who claim that Messi is better than Pele quite simply have no objective facts to back that up.

The great Pele, who always delivered both for his clubs and his country - and the great World Cup choker Messi...NO CONTEST.

Well, I believe good technique is needed to deliver those precise long passes, or free kicks, corners etc.; so even if players like Gerrard, Beckham, Beckenbauer, Pirlo, Lampard aren't mostly known for dribbling artistry - they all have brilliant technique.

Here is Steven Gerrard on a dribbling tour http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJDa...

You have a good point, for that I agree that a good player in most cases have a good technique , especially on middle field where good passing is totally requiring. Gerrard wasn't a great creative player like Maradona, Platini , Zico, Zidane or Gullit for a change, but for sure he has an above average technique. He had a nice touch. But actually that's what he was IMO, a very good player, nothing more.. Not a great on his era, or genius but still..

Yeah, I guess you are right. Maybe I exaggerated the difference a bit. If you have really good technique you can probably both pass the ball well and be a pretty good dribbler.

I haven't seen Pirlo dribble a lot for instance but I guess that is just his style of play. If he would, he probably could dribble the ball quite well.

Karposian: <KKDEREK> <By the way <karposian> , I was reading some columns that indicates some changes in MLS as they have huge plans for 2022. Lots of children plays already at schools but quit for colleges and the players come to the clubs already old by 21 22 years old. They will change that now, increasing the kids to play for the teams since adolescence.>

Yeah, like you say, huge plans for the future. It's obvious that the top guys in US Soccer like MLS Commissioner Don Garber and the national team's head coach Jurgen Klinsmann are very ambitious and they think in terms of long-term strategies. It's not all about making the most profits here and now, and that bodes well for the future I think.

Garber has set 2022 as his goal for MLS to be competitive with the biggest leagues in Europe. Quite an ambitious goal i will say!

But I definitely think it's doable. Revenues are steadily increasing. I read recently in the paper that broadcasting deals with ESPN, Fox and Univision for the next eight seasons will bring in more than $90 million annually.

And MLS is expanding too. Next season there will be twenty-one teams including Orlando and New York City FC. it's great that NYC proper finally gets an MLS team. From before there are the New York Red Bulls of course, but they are actually located in Harrison, NJ.

Definitely, because they have that Red Bull team..yikes..Strange no? I think people will relate much more with this new team full of investments..They want to bring the same attention Americans gives to WC's, qualifiers, to MLS. I lived for a while in NYC, they <love> soccer, also as we know is a very international city, so people dig soccer a lot. Those Manchester City owners made a smart move, thinking ahead. MLS is an unexplored mine gold IMHO.. NYC team will be a success at Yankee stadium.

Yeah, definitely. There is already a huge fan base for this club even if they haven't played a game yet! Fans have already organized themselves and formed a large supporters' group. Soccer at Yankee stadium!! Great!!

I think that the New York Red Bulls attracts as many New Jersey fans as New Yorkers. And now with an MLS team based inside 'the five boroughs' perhaps their support in the city will dwindle even more.

By the way, did you know that the owners of the NY Red Bulls, Red Bull GmbH, also own a Brazilian team, Red Bull Brasil? I just found out, but as I understand it's not exactly one of the top teams in your country.

Yes, I think it's a good thing that there are these owners that own Soccer clubs in various countries. It helps facilitate player exchanges and loans of players etc. between the countries.

Karposian: <KKDEREK> I remember Deco playing for Portugal but what I didn't know was that he was actually born in Brazil.

I read in the piece that he decided to play for Portugal when he realized that he would not be called up for Brazil. Even with all the strong players in Brazil I find it a bit strange that he wasn't elected for your national team, no? I remember him as a very good attacking midfielder for Portugal.

KKDEREK: < Even with all the strong players in Brazil I find it a bit strange that he wasn't elected for your national team, no?> I find weird indeed, buy by 2010 he had already played for Portugal. Before, 2006 and so forth, would be difficult for him as we had great players as Ronaldinho , Rivaldo, Kaka..I love his style, not too much fancy, but very effective. He was a < monster> when playing at Porto wining a CL for them and several national championships. See how things chance in one decade.:Before we could afford to looe a guy like him..Now we don't have nobody at middle field ..
