Chess enthusiast from Southern Germany;

to me, <chess is the battle of ideas: strategy.>

Therefore you won't be surprised to hear that my <<>favorite player is>:

Mikhail Botvinnik

Game Collection - <Botvinniks Best Games> compiled by <Malacha>:

I like to play correspondence chess. You can find me on as <baccano>

<Openings> wise I am interested in the English (Mikhail Botvinnik), Pirc (Duncan Suttles ; Mikhail Botvinnik) and the Gruenfeld (Peter Svidler).

<Saint Louis Chess Club> <>

Favourite Chess related programms, mostly for <<>entertainment>:

<Chess TV World Cup 1982/1983> (German only, sadly) Participants: Karpov, Spassky, Timman, Torre, Lobron, Seiravan and others ... Great, corny programm. Helmut Pfleger is a great commentator and host. Pair him up with Vlastimil Hort and you are in heaven,

Part I:

Part II:

Part III:

Part IV:

Part V:

Part VI:

<Kasparov - Karpov Lyon, 1990> Sadly there is a strong bias towards Kasparov in the program; the last bit is in french only, which also doesn't help.

Sep-13-18 Botvinnik vs Capablanca, 1938 (replies)
Pyke: <in this game the young Capablanca was still no match for the experienced Botvinnik.> Capablanca was more than 20 years older than Botvinnik. This doesn't make any sense.

Pyke: Peter Svidler tells a cool Korchnoi story: Enjoy; without spoiling anything, it's basically about Victor's endless fighting spirit - much to the chagrin of his teammates.

WannaBe: The (second game) against <Pyke> followed the opening of:

A Ipatov vs I Sokolov, 2014

Black went off the "book" with 9...exd3. [If 10. Qxd3 or 10. Nxd3 would create doubled-isolated pawn structure]

14. Bg5 h6 Be3 [I've never liked to play this move as white, I think it wastes a tempo. Maybe it's because I play Be3 & Be2 English Attack a lot as white when facing Sicilian Openings.

Or do the exchange of B/N but black would have developed a pawn and activated the Q.]

16...c5 [17. dxc5 dxc6 and the d-pawn is protected by the bishop on b7. Black will eventually play ...c5 locking the double-pawn structure. Or at least that's my plan.]

17...d6 [I like my pawn structure better. =)]

22...g5 [I am going to chase that bishop one more time.]

24...Rbe8 [I intended on keeping a rook on the e2 square.]

25...Rxe2 [Anticipated 26. Be3 to bring another defender, or 26. f3]

29...Ne5 with the intention ...Ba6 to capture the c4 pawn. Black would be 2 pawns up.

Pyke: Browsing this site you find real gems, like the <game collections> of Botvinnik's own 3 set volume of his best games. Links in my profile and thanks to <Malacha> for compiling them. She or he doesn't seem to be active on this site anymore, though.
Sep-07-18  parisattack: I just read your Profile. I feel I learned the most from Botvinnik and am mostly partial to your opening favorites.

Do you have the Suttles trio books - Chess on the Edge?

I've never tried the Grunfeld. What do you like against the Exchange Variation?

Premium Chessgames Member
Pyke: Hello <parisattack>, thank you for stopping by and reading the profile.

Yes, studying Botvinnik's games is truely rewarding.

I haven't got any of the Suttles Books you mentioned - I'll have to take a look. I mostly use John Watson's Mastering the Chess Openings series for opening studies.

In the Gruenfeld I like setups with 7. ...c5 followed by 8. ...Nc6 with the idea of putting as much pressure on the centre as possible.

Sep-27-18  parisattack: The main line. Gligoric's games as White are very instructive for me. He is responsible for several innovations in that variation.

I believe the seminal work on the Grunfeld is Trifunovic's Grunfelda Indiska Odbrana (sic) as I don't have it in front of me. Botvinnik and Estrin's Greunfeld (RHM Press) is another oldie-but-goodie.

If you have some games with the Main Line I'd be interested in seeing them, thx.

In any event I am going to try it in a few email games, see how it goes and feels.

whiteshark: <Pyke: I haven't got any of the Suttles Books you mentioned - I'll have to take a look.> --> games
It has all the games analysed in the three books. And there are other thing to explore there. ;)
Sep-29-18  parisattack: Very cool,danke <Whiteshark>.

Another series of three books of games by a hypermodern (correspondence) player - the Stephan Gerzadowicz trio - Journal of a Chess Master, Journal of a Chess Original and Correspondence Chess Master. Entertaining and instructive tomes!

Pyke: Hi guys, thanks for dropping by and the input. Sorry for the late reply.

I'll respond in detail soon. Work is crazy at the moment, putting in at least 12 hours a day ;-).

Thanks for the link <Whiteshark>!

<Parisattack> I'll check my database for games. But since I started playing correspondence again some months ago, I do not recall having any Gruenfelds. Maybe I have some older games, I will check.
