  crawfb5: This one just ended. No remarkable blunders or brilliancies, but sometimes a caveman-style king hunt is just fun.

  crawfb5: <H> Usually, but lately not so much. Maybe it's because most of these are team games that the last thing they lose is hope.

Last cycle our team crushed everybody in our group, scoring 50/56. It helped that we had a super-strong board 1, so I could play board 2. Even though I've moved up to board 1 this cycle, we're at 16/17, and I'm at 4/4 (12/12 for both cycles).

  playground player: <hms123> I've had to do a lot of nagging about it, but my publisher is finally exploring the prospect of getting <Bell Mountain> put up for one of Amazon's one-day deals. While they're at it, they're also going to get my books included in Barnes & Noble's list (about time!), both in hardcover and e-book formats.

The problem is that nobody knows how to get a particular book included in Amazon's one-day deal package. You can't just call them up and ask them. It's very difficult to get questions answered by Amazon. But the staffer who is handling this for me is both competent and persistent. She'll keep at it until she gets it done.

I'll keep you posted.

  crawfb5: Here's the ending I alluded to earlier. I got out of the opening in good shape, but pushed too hard in the middlegame and drifted into a bad position, eventually giving up a pawn. This one is also not quite a blunder du jour, but approaching a swindle on my part.

crawfb5-NN, White to move

<42. Qb4 Qxb4+ 43. axb4 Kf7 44. Nd4 a6 45. Nc6>

The first point -- Black cannot hold the a-pawn and my b-pawn becomes dangerous.

<45...Be4 46. Nb8 Bf3 47. Nxa6 Bxg4 48. b5 d4 49. b6 Bf3 50. Nc5 g5?>

click for larger view

A tempting, natural-looking move, but Black's last chance to hold was 50...g6 51. hxg6+ Kxg6 52. Nxe6, which Houdini evaluates as only slightly better for White. It's dicey, but I could believe it's drawn. In any event, it would have been better than the text move.

<51. b7!>

Surprise! Sure, you can have that protected passed pawn, but now your King cannot infiltrate the kingside and your pawn is one file closer to my King should you push it. It's time to collect the Bishop and start picking off loose pawns.

<51...Bxb7 52. Nxb7 g4 53. Nd6+ Ke7 54. Nxc4>

There's one.

<54...Kd7 55. Ke2 Kc6 56. Kf2 Kc5 57. Nd2>

Note how the b-pawn and the Knight prevent Black from getting in on the queenside. It was one of those endings where things just seemed to be on the best squares. Good for me, bad for him. The rest is routine technique.

<57...Kd5 58. Kg3 Kxe5 59. Kxg4 d3 60. Kf3 Kd4 61. Kf4 e5+ 62. Kf3 e4+ 63. Nxe4 Kc4 64. Nd2+ Kd4 65. Kf4 Kd5 66. Ke3 Ke5 67. Kxd3 Kf5 68. b4 Ke5 69. Kc4 Kd6 70. b5 Kc7 71. Kc5 Kb7 72. b6 Kb8 73. Kc6 Kc8 74. b7+ Kb8 75. Ne4 Ka7 76. Kc7 1-0>

  playground player: <hms123> Well, I think I've got my publisher convinced to participate in those one-day deals. The problem now is, no one can find out who to get in on it. Amazon.com is very hard to get information from, and I'm not set up for Barnes & Noble yet. We can only keep trying...

  playground player: <hms123> The NSA is watching, listening, analyzing... Now some of my statements about the purpose of the Second Amendment being to protect us from our own government don't sound so radical, do they?
Jun-13-13
Premium Chessgames Member
  hms123: <pgp>.

Actually, they do. I don't think going to DC and shooting at the NSA building will be of much use.

The real problem is that the horse is out of the barn on privacy. Google knows if I am thinking of buying a watch or going on vacation. Amazon knows what I read and what I am thinking of reading next. Spotify radio knows what music I like. Private individuals are taking pictures of everything all the time, and are happy to turn them over to the government when asked. Oh, did I mention that the TSA knows more about my body than my physician?

It is not good at all. And it has been going on for a long while. We are our own worst enemies. As Pogo said, "we have met the enemy...and he is us.".

http://www.igopogo.com/we_have_met....

Look at the date for that quotation.

  playground player: <hms123> Now, now--I never suggested shooting at anyone. I merely repeated our country's founders' thoughts on the right to bear arms as a safeguard of liberty.

Meanwhile, the regime is arguing "there is no expectation of privacy," blah-blah... like anyone with half an ounce of sanity would trust *them* not to abuse this enormous resource of information. Plenty of bad stuff floating in this pot!

Information is power--and I don't want the government to have that much power. It's bad enough that business interests can acquire it; but at least amazon.com won't make you disappear if they don't like the cut of your jib.

Our freedom has measurably decreased in the past few years.

Getting it back won't be easy.
