NJ--no rating. Favorites, Morphy, Marshall, Anderssen. Played a lot as a teen, then let it go for 40 years. Trying to reconstitute myself as a chess player.

Meanwhile, let this forum serve as a refuge from wild-eyed loony leftism. Here there will be no admiration for Hugo Chavez, Castro, or any of the other tin-pot dictators admired by chess players from the safety of freedom-loving Western democracies. Here will be found a premise that most of the nations of the world today are governed by Godless fools. Ours, too, unfortunately.

I was also going to say some uncomplimentary things about Queen Pawn games, the Sicilian and the French Defenses, Semi-Slav games, and a few other chess matters. But as those are purely questions of personal taste, I have chosen to leave them alone.

Since setting up this forum, I have also had several novels published: "Bell Mountain," "The Cellar Beneath the Cellar," and "The Thunder King." For more information about them (and me), visit my website, http://leeduigon.com/

Update, much delayed: my fourth book, "The Last Banquet," came out last year, and my fifth, "The Fugitive Prince," I expect to be published sometime this Spring. For book covers and free sample chapters, visit my blog.

Update again: "The Fugitive Prince" is out now and the next project is "The Palace." Editing is well advanced, but we're still waiting for a cover.

Update: "The Palace" is in print now along with No. 7, "The Glass Bridge," with No. 8, "The Temple," waiting in the wings. The first seven are all available via amazon.com.

Update: No. 8, "The Temple," and No.9, "The Throne," are now in print, with No. 10, "The Silver Trumpet,"due for release any day now.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

playground player: <optimal play> I've never owned a gun, but I'm glad millions of my fellow law-abiding, peaceful citizens do.

What this is all about is the very people who trashed our culture--liberals--by preaching Godlessness, moral relativism and anarchy, and undermining the family, now offer themselves as our saviors from gun violence. But the problem is not guns, but the corruption of our culture.

When my father was a boy, just about everyone he knew had guns. Kids took their guns to school so they could hunt or target-shoot after school. There were **no** school shootings.

When I was a boy, if you wanted a gun, you just walked into the store and bought one. I remember the rifles on display in the sporting goods sections of several big department stores. You could also buy a gun via mail order. And again, there were no school shootings.

The Left assumes that when they do attempt their total takeover, the military will obey them. I doubt it!

I've had a couple of emails so far today from Canadian readers anticipating, with great rejoicing, a blowout victory against the Far Left in the next elections. Looks like you've got plenty of company!

I pray we in the USA have learned our lesson and will never, ever again allow Democrats to take power here.

Doesn't the US military have drones?

How does owning an automatic military assault rifle protect you from a tyrannical government armed with drones?

Or what about the latest F-35A Lightning II jet fighter?>

Can Nancy Pelosi fly a jet?

They'd need to be real sure it
doesn't drop its payload on
Obama/Clinton mansions.

<diceman> Interesting. I wonder if I too can get a "job" as a victim. I suppose stealing my tax dollars is a kind of "job" but I'd say it's more of a "crime."

I wonder how much of the Canadian Liberal Party budget is dedicated to catching welfare cheats.

I'm guessing somewhere around 0.00 dollars (Canadian funds).

Good article <Lee>. Luckily the Canadian electorate is set to throw the bums out right across the country.

No premier in Canadian history has had an approval rating lower than <Kathy Whine>.

She's even worse than <Elizabeth Warren>.

I watched a youtube video uploaded by the actual Cherokee nation in which they searched- in vain- for the slightest shred of evidence she is an Indian.

They found none and they were none too happy about it. Ironically, *actual* Indians don't like Social Justice Warrior liars lying about their own culture.

I saw the video on a <Ben Stein> podcast a few months ago but I can't find it now. Luckily here's another one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipp...

What a disgusting liar <Warren> is. Why isn't she being investigated and fired?

Mar-30-18  optimal play: <playground player> I agree that corruption of western culture is the central problem, although why sensible gun control must necessarily be off the agenda still escapes me.

When you were a boy and anyone could just walk into a store and buy a gun, or order one through mail order, was it possible to get an automatic assault rifle?

Also, you make an interesting point about the Left wrongly assuming that when they attempt their total takeover, they'll have the support of the military. It's virtually certain they won't, which raises the issue of why the citizenry are therefore required to arm themselves to the hilt against a tyrannical government which could never gain control of the military.

Anyway Lee, may I wish you and your family a happy and holy Easter.

And a happy Easter also to <OhioChessFan>, <jessicafischerqueen>, <diceman>, <cormier>, <WannaBe>, <technical draw> and all the other regulars on your forum.

playground player: <OhioChessFan> Thanks for the song--I used it to start up my blog today.

<optimal play> And a happy Easter to you, too.

I'm not sure what anybody means by "sensible gun control." I don't think any store was ever selling military hardware, so preventing that can't be what the gun-grabbers have in mind. Like, how many people even want to buy a .50 caliber machine gun?

Given the corruption of the culture, our countries do now include environments wherein if you don't have a gun, you're a sitting duck. Police are not able to arrive in time to protect you, so you have to be able to protect yourself.

Really, I don't believe the Left will ever be satisfied with anything less than total confiscation of all kinds of firearms. You know the pattern, you've seen it before. First "civil unions," then "gay marriage," and then everyone has to "celebrate" and take part in it when called upon to do so, and boy, are you in trouble if you dare to venture an objection on religious grounds.

And again, guns don't turn people into killers. They're killers already--because those who now push gun control have corrupted the culture. They mustn't be rewarded for it, by being given even more power than they have already.

Why isn't it "sensible" to look at
government failure and say, they either
can't, or are not interested in doing what's right?

Why isn't it "sensible" to look at the
"Great Society" examine its human atrocity/failure and say, I don't want these people running anything?

Why isn't it "sensible" to look at the
domestic slaughter/incarceration of the
minority and say, Civil Rights leaders/Government don't care?

Why isn't it "sensible" to look at politicians moving into mansions as they give people crumbs, and think they may have other motives?

Why isn't it "sensible" to believe liars who have lied before, are still liars?

Why is it "sensible" to believe whats never happened yet, will this time?

On what metric does the liberal own the word "sensible?"

Mar-30-18  optimal play: <playground player:

I'm not sure what anybody means by "sensible gun control.">

Well, for starters, do you believe that under the second amendment any person in the USA, including anyone with a serious psychiatric disorder or violent criminal conviction, should be allowed to purchase as many guns as they like, up to and including an arsenal of military assault rifles, and all the ammunition they can store?

A sensible person would say "no".

A gun-nut would refuse to answer.

So if reasonable people can agree that anyone with a serious psychiatric disorder or violent criminal conviction, should *not* be allowed to purchase as many guns as they like, up to and including an arsenal of military assault rifles, and all the ammunition they can store, then you have the starting point for sensible gun control.

It's then up to Americans of goodwill on both sides of the debate to work out the details.

Yep, yep. Get their foot in the door with appeals to "reasonable" restrictions, and go from there. There's a handful of hard core libs who 100% embrace that, and they have a lot of useful idiots who are ignorant of history to go along with them.

<You know the pattern, you've seen it before. First "civil unions," then "gay marriage," and then everyone has to "celebrate" and take part in it when called upon to do so, and boy, are you in trouble if you dare to venture an objection on religious grounds.>

Don't ask, don't tell comes to mind. The liars on the left cited that as a law that is "only 20 years old" when they appealed to have openly gay people be allowed in the military. And the brain dead Kardashian fans of 2018 USA fell for it.

Have you ever shot anyone?

<playground player: <optimal play> I don't know anyone who says psychotics and criminals ought to be able to purchase military weapons.> I think I may have come across someone.

<That's a straw man argument.> No it's not.

It's not an argument at all.

In asking that question I'm not creating an informal fallacy in order to give the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, since I'm not portraying all supporters of the second amendment as believing that psychotics and criminals ought to be able to purchase military weapons, but rather posing a question regarding an extreme position in order to determine the prospect of achieving common ground upon which both sides of the debate can come together in order to formulate the framework for sensible firearm legislation.

<The culture is a mess, and that's why we have school shootings.>

The culture is a mess, and with the ready availability of military-grade assault rifles, you have school shootings.
