HeMateMe: I looked at both games, pieces flying about, good fighting chess.
Feb-24-10  kackhander: Not a great advert for the sicilian though :O)
Feb-24-10  dumbgai: 1. e4 c5?? 2. c3! wins for white.
Feb-24-10  Poisonpawns: < dumbgai: 1. e4 c5?? 2. c3! wins for white.> No 1.e4 c5?? 2.b4! wins for white.
Feb-24-10  ruelas007: whoa this is gonna be so interesting, matches like this should be played more oftenly, this way we dont get boring positions from drawish openings. besides sicilian always provides the best entertainment for chess fans. Thus action assured
Feb-24-10  14DogKnight: 1. e4 wins for white
Feb-24-10  refutor: are there more games or is this it?

HeMateMe: Years ago wasn't there a tournament based on the Najdorf, all games had to be a Najdorf, held in Argentina, to honor its main practicioner?
Feb-24-10  Chessnut333: someone better tell these 2 that the chessgame.com kibitzers have refuted the sicilian
Feb-24-10  desiobu: <refutor> I think the third round was played today.
Feb-24-10  kevinatcausa: Maybe they could do chess matches like Iron Chef...before each game the players draw their opening out of a hat.
Feb-24-10  CruyffTurn: <refutor> This is more up-to-date than cg.com http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/chessne...
Feb-24-10  CruyffTurn: <kevinatcausa: before each game the players draw their opening out of a hat.> Already have: They will play the following Sicilian Variations: Gm1) Sveshnikov, Gm2) Dragon, Gm3) Najdorf and Gm4) Scheveningen.
Feb-24-10  Shams: <CruyffTurn> Polgar with white in game four-- would a sporting Kaidanov allow the Keres Attack? That would sure be a blast from the past. Judit scored some really nice wins with that line if I remember correctly.
Feb-24-10  SirChrislov: No draws offers in less than 40? Is this in honor of Fischer who once said to Smyslov- "I don't take draws in less than 40 moves"?
Feb-24-10  wolfmaster: Wow, Judit is a lifetime sicilian player, and of course a Super-GM. It surprises me that she's lost twice to a GM past his prime who does not play the Sicilian much.
Feb-24-10  redwhitechess: OOoo 0-3 for my favorite defence against 1.e4? T_T . Btw, actually who strong GM can be considered as Black Sicilian specialist? I can remember Loek van Wely right now.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Are they going to play two games with each variation, so each player can try both sides?
Feb-25-10  OneArmedScissor: Loek van Wely loses all the time in the Sicilian.
Why would you watch his games?
Feb-25-10  kurtrichards: Three games so far and white side always won...hmmm.

Kaidanov v. Polgar 1-0
Polgar v. Kaidanov 1-0
Kaidanov v. Polgar 1-0

I'm beginning to think that Sicilian Defense is good only for White.

But maybe am wrong.

Feb-25-10  kevinatcausa: <Already have: They will play the following Sicilian Variations: Gm1) Sveshnikov, Gm2) Dragon, Gm3) Najdorf and Gm4) Scheveningen.>

But those were chosen far in advance of the actual match, and the players have been preparing their openings since then. I'm talking about choosing the openings at the time of the match.

Feb-25-10  kingsindian2006: is this the first ever theme match?
I think this is a wonderful idea for chess fans!! I love this match and hope there are more of them !
Feb-25-10  Justawoodpusher: I wondered recently if the Sicilian is getting more and more busted, so I looked up the database for white and black wins and the draws:

<All time>
white wins:35,6
black wins:30,9
draw:33,6
<2009>
white wins:37,2
black wins:29,9
draw:32,8

Although I know this is barely statistically significient it could indicate a trend. Nevertheless I'll play tomorrow with my team and if there is e4 on the board I will respond c5!

Feb-25-10  Justawoodpusher: <HeMateMe> 1994 there was a tournament in Buenos Aires with the the Sicilian as the general opening. W.Salov won the tournament, Polgar got the 4. place out of eight. Games are also in the data base.
Feb-25-10  rapidcitychess: I'm a positional player and detest being white. As black I have an array of solid defenses. As white, there is only the Barcza and the QGD. But the Barcza is boring, and the QGD has been replaced by the Slav. Don't get me wrong, I love the Slav defense but not as white. White must thread through the Botvinnik Gambit, and the Merano game. I no longer hear " I want to be white!" Modern defenses have killed the King's pawn opening, and I fear that the Queen's pawn game is next. Please, those chess experts, please give me something to save my favorite defenses, as black and white. I will list them here and put them up for conversation here: King's Pawn, Open Sicilian, Queen's Pawn, and Gruenfeld.

Thank you,
rapidcitychess ( play me on fics)
