Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Gibraltar Masters (2010)

The 8th Gibraltar Masters was a 224-player 10-round Swiss tournament held in the Caleta Hotel, La Caleta, Gibraltar from 26 January to 4 February 2010, as part of the Gibtelecom Gibraltar Chess Festival. Time control: 100 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 50 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 more minutes until the end of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. A tie for first place to be settled in a knockout playoff (two 10 min + 10 sec games, and if needed an Armageddon game). First prize: GBP 15.000. The festival also featured four amateur tournaments (Challengers A and B, Amateurs A and B) and other events. Chief organizer: the English Chess Federation with Stuart C Conquest and others. Chief arbiter: Laurent Freyd. Games started at 3 pm (Round 10 contenders for tiebreaks: 10 am).

Michael Adams won the event by beating Gustafsson and Vallejo Pons in the 4-player Gibraltar Masters (Tiebreaks) (2010). The top 4 players (out of 9) were decided on performance rating. Zhukova won the women's top prize of GBP 8.000.

Feb-03-10  PhilFeeley: Can Adams break through this or is it another draw:

Adams - Lemos after 43. h5

Feb-03-10  PhilFeeley: ...from the previous position Adams - Lemos: 43...gxh5 44. Nxh5 Nf5
Feb-03-10  PhilFeeley: 45. Nf6 Ng7 46. g3 Qe7 47 Kg2 1-0 with about 40 minutes left each. Zugzwang, I guess..
Feb-03-10  swordfish: Looks like Gustafson has company at the top again, going into the final round. Besides Adams, Movsesian and Vallejo-Pons also won. A couple of games are still being played.
Feb-03-10  PhilFeeley: The final position, as far as I can tell for Chanda-Boskovic:

with white to move and lots of time, I don't see how this is a draw. The broadcast changed as I watched it, so perhaps there's an error.

Feb-03-10  unsound: <PhilFeeley> <45. Nf6 Ng7 46. g3 Qe7 47 Kg2 1-0 with about 40 minutes left each. Zugzwang, I guess..> Yes, I guess so--it wasn't immediately obvious to me why he resigned, until I started looking at the possible remaining moves for black and seeing how white exploited them. Pretty classic Adams squeeze, actually.
Feb-03-10  PhilFeeley: Indeed there was an "error" in the Chanda game. He played K-b7 instead of b5, which makes a whole lot more sense.
Feb-03-10  nescio: <PhilFeeley: 45. Nf6 Ng7 46. g3 Qe7 47 Kg2 1-0 with about 40 minutes left each. Zugzwang, I guess..>

I think it's more beautiful than that. After 47.Kg2 White will play Ra3-a1-h1 and after a rook exchange he threatens Qh6 and Qh8 mate. Black may be able to avoid the mate, for example by Nf5 and Qd8, but that will cost him some material.

Feb-04-10  swordfish: Gustafson - Movsesian 1/2
Vallejo-Pons - Adams 1/2
Bacrot - Cramling 1-0

It's at least a five-way tie for first prize.

Feb-04-10  PhilFeeley: Kamsky is trying hard to join them. He's in a bishop+rook ending with 2 pawns to none. It's his to win or draw.
Feb-04-10  shalgo: Kamsky won and Sandipan is about to mate Javakhisvili, so that is two more at 7.5
Feb-04-10  Roger Krueger: Looks like Kamsky gets screwed--Sandipan is going to have a single point of TPR on him. (It's a screw because Kamsky had six blacks, there should be a compensation to TPR for this when it's used as a tiebreak... but there isn't.)
Feb-04-10  shalgo: From the official site:

"John Saunders reports: The games between the leaders were all drawn this morning so we know we have a play-off situation. But we don't know who will be in the play-offs yet as only four players can take part, based on who has the highest tournament performance rating. As I write, at least six players - Adams, Bacrot, Gustafsson, Movsesian, Vallejo Pons and Kamsky - have 7½/10 and Chanda Sandipan may join them on that score if he wins. Four of those six/seven players will play off. More news when we have it."

Feb-04-10  Roger Krueger: Haven't seen the exact TPRs, but my understanding from watching the Conquest commentary is (Adams/Gustafsson/Vallejo Pons) > Sandipan > Kamsky > Bacrot > Movsesian. Sandipan gets the last playoff spot.
Feb-04-10  PhilFeeley: Ridiculous...
Feb-04-10  ROADDOG: First Game:
Gustafsson - Adams 1-0
Vallejo Pons - Sandipan 1-0

How many games to they play?

Feb-04-10  ROADDOG: 2nd playoff game:

Adams - Gustafsson 1-0
Sandipan - Vallejo Pons 1/2-1/2

Feb-04-10  whiteshark: Third game is an Armageddon game...
Feb-04-10  whiteshark: ...won by Adams.
Feb-04-10  ROADDOG: <whiteshark: Third game is an Armageddon game...> Yes, and just won by Adams. So he'll face Vallejo-Pons for the Championship.
