Apr-12-12  hellopolgar: i think Moro will be set back by this painful draw. He missed so many chances to win, it must be heartbreaking.

HeMateMe: I thought Borat was from the glorious republic of kazanastan?
Apr-12-12  whiteshark: Moro missed a sudden winning opportunity that occured after <115...Nc4??> <116. Rxb4! axb4 117. Be6 Ne5+ 118. Kd6 b3 119. Kxe5 b2 120. Ba2>
Apr-12-12  waustad: <whiteshark>They were both playing on the increment. It isn't a big surprise that some things may have been missed.
Apr-12-12  whiteshark: <waustad> Thanks, that makes it quite understandable!
Apr-12-12  hellopolgar: I am a big Moro fan but i believe that Moro lacks the kind of "chess intuition" that Carlsen possesses. Carlsen talked about it, sometimes he just <knows> what to do for some unknown reason.

Moro is definitely very smart and can out-smart a lot of 2700ish players, but without intuition, he let Caruana slip away with a draw.

Given the same position after black's 40th move, Carlsen would have finished Caruana easily.

Apr-13-12  fisayo123: <Hellopolgar> The time controls are not the best.
Apr-13-12  hellopolgar: <fisayo123:The time controls are not the best.> My point exactly. when time is running low, intuition starts playing an even more important role.
Apr-13-12  Strongest Force: On Friday 13th there are strange things afoot. Fab's victim forgot his silver bullits, holy water and garlic and fell to the blood-drinking knight-stalker.

HeMateMe: Are there any Americans playing in the Russian team championships? Wouldn't a fellow as talented as Gata Kamsky, a born Russian, get invited to play for a club over there?
Apr-13-12  Strongest Force: HMM, Gata and Nak most likely let it be known: no romance without finance.

HeMateMe: Well, I thought the whole idea was that they WERE getting paid, this is just exhibition chess. Sochi, nice warm resort on the black Sea. It just seems like some of those deep pocketed energy czars are paying for all-star teams to clash with other all star teams, set them up in 4 star hotels on the Black Sea.

Why would Peter Leko be there, if he wasn't getting paid? Perhaps the money isn't enough for people in North America to make the long trip. In Leko's case, he needs some good results to try and make it back into the elite group, to get some proper tournament invitations.

Apr-13-12  waustad: Leko seems to have taken a sabbatical but has been back for a while: http://ratings.fide.com/id.phtml?ev...
Apr-13-12  cro777: COUNTERCHECK WITH THE KING!

Svidler - Morozevich. Position after 17.Nxc6+

17...Kd7+ A discovered countercheck!!

Apr-13-12  waustad: One interesting point is that I don't recall anybody mentioning how a team is doing. That has a serious effect on the games, which is why I've often thought that team tourneys should not be rated. First place recently was hanging on the 4th board game.

http://www.russiachess.org/images/s...

If you go through the tournament (and many team tournaments), the top boards usually draw and the real action is on the bottom boards. Here we aren't seeing the 12 move draws as much as in some (the word has come down). Jakovenko is a counterexample because he has only one draw on board 1.

Apr-14-12  Birthday Boy: I'm glad to see Peter Leko playing =)
Apr-14-12  Strongest Force: Bologan seems to be rolling-up Eljanov like a piece of chewing gum that's about to be thrown away.
Apr-14-12  Birthday Boy: Yeah, Bologan will win soon.
Apr-14-12  cro777: PUZZLE OF THE DAY

Russian Team Championships 2012

Can a solid grandmaster (with black) loose the following position?

Position after 50...Rxa3

"It’s hard to imagine that a solid grandmaster could lose something like that. But he managed. And he did it without blunders, slowly, gradually." (Shipov)

See game for solution.

Dreev vs M Brodsky, 2012

Apr-14-12  Strongest Force: Bologan's 28.Rd6!! was a pretty knock out punch.
Apr-14-12  messachess: Hell0 cg.com: why not include the rnd. 4 127-mover between Moro. and Carauna?
Apr-14-12  balzarius: Caruana has just gained another victory and his live rating is 2773.2 only 2 points below Karjakin's who is currently #5 in the world.
