Apr-29-09 | | Davolni: Just as you said it MAL!!!
Showtime the Armenian style!!!
LOL!!!
I'm real happy for Aronian, and specially for Akopian, for such a nice finish!!! And as far as thanking everyone, I just felt like thanking the players for their great show for us spectators, and also everybody else who made this thing possible! That's all...
wanna call it an Oscar, or miss universe... up to you ;) lol ;) |
Apr-29-09 | | jurado96: nice finish for such a great player
well deserved victory |

 | | JointheArmy: <JointheArmy><I wonder if a short draw is in order tomorrow. It would make sense for both Leko and Aronian since they would both share first place. If I was Aronian, I would push Leko hard. He tends to fold under pressure.> Not to gloat, but did I call that @#$% or what? |
Apr-29-09 | | swordfish: Yes, congratulations to Aronian, who seems to have the knack of finishing at or near the top of strong tournaments. Also, Leko and Akopian -equal second is quite a good showing. |
Apr-29-09 | | messachess: A fine tournament. Thanks to all the players for some great fan-pleasing games, and congrats to Aronian on 1st place. |
Apr-29-09 | | messachess: also, maybe this is a breakout tourney for Akopian--great tournament, and much appreciated effort by Leko, with a chance for 1st! |
Apr-29-09 | | arnaud1959: There's only 2 pts difference between the 2nd and the 14th (last). All the players proved that they deserved to be in this tournament. |
Apr-29-09 | | Jim Bartle: Did Bacrot start with eight draws, and finish with five decisive games? |
Apr-29-09 | | Udit Narayan: Yeah, he must read the boards and about all the people calling him Bacdraw. |
Apr-29-09 | | parmetd: yes Jim. |
Apr-29-09 | | karoaper: <Udit Narayan: Yeah, he must read the boards and about all the people calling him Bacdraw.>
I'm sure whenever he reads such snide nicknames, he becomes a total mess, can't sleep or eat for weeks, probably goes into depression, gets on medicine, etc. In other words, a reaction similar to what you or I would have after being called a "poopyhead" by some 5 year old. |
Apr-29-09 | | Octavia: Levon lives in Berlin, Deutschland, doesn't he? Pro chess players are best off when living in the centre of Europe, cause its easy to travel everywhere by surface transport. |

With 2 unshared 1st places in his two tournaments so far, Aronian is of course the one with the best chances for qualifying to the candidates from one of the 2 GP spots; even a half-decent result in one of his two remaining tournaments should probably be enough. After this tournament, Svidler and Karjakin are left without any chance to qualify this way, even if they get the maximum number of points in their last tournament (and so is Kamsky - but he's already guaranteed a spot, so it doesn't really matter...) |
Apr-29-09 | | adair10: Aronian won both Sochi and Nalchik in a similar manner. In both tournaments he achieved needed +4 score in a must-win last rounds against Grischuk in Sochi and Leko in Nalchik. Feel sorry for Leko who, if not the last round defeat, had an excellent performance. |
Apr-29-09 | | Vasilyev90: God Bless Armenia1I hope LevonAronian becomes the next world champion!I'll also marry an Armenian woman someday! |
Apr-30-09 | | ahmadov: <adair10: Aronian won both Sochi and Nalchik in a similar manner. In both tournaments he achieved needed +4 score in a must-win last rounds against Grischuk in Sochi and Leko in Nalchik.> And now Aronian has best chances to be one of those three winners of the entire FIDE Grand Prix... |
Apr-30-09 | | ahmadov: I am not very familiar with Bacrot performance, but was this tournament one of his best in last few years? |
Apr-30-09 | | arnaud1959: Probably yes. At least at this level I think. But recently he won Aeroflot open 2009, which was a pretty strong tournament.

Apr-30-09 | | Valmy: YES Bacrot did well and without this stupid loss agains Grishuk he would be join second.
But of course every player can regret a "stupid loss " or two! |
Apr-30-09 | | extremepleasure2: Do you know how many players from FIDE Grand Prix will qualify in Candidates event of World Championship Cycle? Is there any link for that? |
Apr-30-09 | | arsen387: Congrats to Aronian for winning this in style, a well-deserved victory. But what Akopian did, is more impressive I think. Noone could expect that he'll finish with +2 and 4 wins! especially after his -2 after the first 4 rounds. Great job by Armenians! I hope Leko will win on of his remaining 2 Grand Prix's, shared 2nd is not the end of all hopes |
Apr-30-09 | | Eyal: Two players qualify from the GP to the candidates.
<In 2011, there will be a Candidate Matches/Tournament consisting of GM Kamsky, the loser of the Anand-Topalov match, two players from the Grand Prix series and one player from the World Cup, two highest rated players not already qualified and a player nominated by the organizer. The winner will play the World Champion [i.e., the winner of the Anand-Topalov match] in 2011.> (http://www.fide.com/component/conte...) That is, unless they change the rules again in the middle of the cycle, which is always a possibility with FIDE. |
Apr-30-09 | | extremepleasure2: Thank you for your answer Eyal.
In the link you posted it says that one player from the World Cup will be include to the cyle. Do you know when the World Cup will be held and where? |
Apr-30-09 | | Eyal: <extremepleasure2> The World Cup is supposed to take place during November-December this year, in Khanty-Mansiysk - just like in 2007. The format also seems to be the same - knockout with 128 players at the start. See http://www.fide.com/component/conte... |
Apr-30-09 | | Eyal: <All the participants were presented memorable awards: Gata Kamsky for his "Will to victory", Rustam Kasimdzhanov was called "Chess Ciceron", Shakhriyar Mamedyarov became an "All-round developed sportsmen", "The prize of the viewers sympathies" went to Vassily Ivanchuk> (http://nalchik2009.fide.com/) Mamedyarov getting an award as "All-round developed sportsmen" - there's a sick joke. |
