Astana (2001) In 2001, during the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence in the wake of the Soviet Union's dissolution, a double round robin chess tournament was held in the capital city of Astana. Six of the world's best players, including the world champion, participated in the category XX event. The participants were (in order of ELO): Garry Kasparov (2835), Vladimir Kramnik (2797), Alexander Morozevich (2749), Alexey Shirov (2722), Boris Gelfand (2712) and Kazakhstan's number one player Darmen Sadvakhasov (2585). Kasparov made it nine tournament wins in a row on his streak to ten with his undefeated victory here, in sole first place with 7/10.
