Jul-20-12  Midas Touch: Bh6 ...
Jul-20-12  achieve: <Shams> You win the cake! - largest part at least ;)

<Midas Touch: Bh6 ...> Good idea, but after f6 or even f5 Black seems OK.

The trick here is to cement that F7 pawn, immobilize it, and then the threat over the b1-h7 diagonal can not be solved. More or less. There are lines where Black is just a piece behind, but the position is a mess.

Jul-20-12  Eyal: A bit reminiscent of the famous Fischer vs Benko, 1963
Jul-20-12  achieve: Yes, with the rook playing a similar role on <f6>.

You have a keen memory.

Jul-20-12  waustad: Would anybody have expected to see Jobova in dead last?
Jul-20-12  waustad: Giri won again in the Dutch Champs. 5.5/6 with one more round to go.
Jul-20-12  achieve: Congrats to Giri, 3rd time Dutch champion, but I can't shake the feeling that his opponents really play below their potential.

More likely is that I am mistaken.

Chess at the top is about punishing mistakes, and Giri did just that this week.

Jul-20-12  achieve: Ivanchuk - Sasikiran is mightily tense now at move 35.

Chuky up a pawn/2, but down a nagging exchange: RR v RBN

Jul-21-12  shivasuri4: <achieve>, you gave CG today's POTD!
Jul-21-12  achieve: Yes, it's Saturday, 9:30 in the morning, and I just noticed... How the heck did that happen so fast? ;)
Jul-21-12  waustad: Going into the final round Chuky is +3, Kamsky is +2 and Anna M and Sutovsky are +1. Chuky and Anna play in the final round. Kamsky plays Jobova.
Jul-21-12  Everett: < Eyal: A bit reminiscent of the famous Fischer vs Benko, 1963>

And a lot of other games, too, long before that one. Since it is called "Alekhine's Block" we might as well give the man his due.

Game Collection: Alekhine's Block

Jul-22-12  achieve: Brilliant Game Collection...

the Block Sac

Indeed one of many tactical (and positional) features.

Jul-22-12  Shams: What happened to Jobava here? A disaster for him.
Jul-22-12  brankat: A very fine performance by Ivanchuk. A good showing for Kamsky, too. And, certainly for Anna.

Twelve decisive games out of 21.

Jul-22-12  Marmot PFL: Top bad it wasn't rated. offhand I think Ivanchuk would move up to #6 and Kamsky to #11 (maybe these are too high but that's my guess).
Jul-22-12  brankat: <Marmot PFL> <Top bad it wasn't rated...>? :-)

HeMateMe: Why isn't this tournament rated?
Jul-23-12  SimonWebbsTiger: @<HMM>

It wasn't rated because of its non-standard nature! i.e. Long gone are the days of 150/40 with adjournments, so it was just a bit of fun with the old format. I bet Jobava is happy it wasn't rated too. :)

Domdaniel: Was this experiment (classic time controls with adjournment) ever repeated? Or were these the last GM games to be adjourned?
Dec-21-16  Eyal: <Dom> There was a second edition of this "Golden Classic" two years later - ACP Golden Classic (2014) ; but that's it, as far as I know.

Domdaniel: <Eyal> Thanks. So the 2014 event probably had the last GM games to be adjourned? It didn't seem to make a great difference.
