Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Euwe Memorial (1996)

The tenth and final Max Euwe Memorial Chess Tournament was organized by the Verenigde Spaarbank (VSB) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands from March 22 to April 1, 1996. Ten grandmasters, all of whom had participated in the last four editions of the Euwe Memorial, were invited to participate in the round robin format. Vasyl Ivanchuk demanded additional costs made to him on account of his seconds, however, so his invitation was rescinded and his seat given to Boris Gelfand. The complete list of participants included (in order of Elo): Garry Kasparov (2775), Vladimir Kramnik (2775), Viswanathan Anand (2725), Boris Gelfand (2700), Veselin Topalov (2700), Nigel Short (2665), Joel Lautier (2630), Yasser Seirawan (2630), Jan Timman (2620), and Jeroen Piket (2570). The average rating of the players qualified the tournament as a Category XVIII event. As with most events he participated in during the year 1996, Topalov performed amazingly, starting in the first round with a win against the World Champion Kasparov. Topalov's dynamic play and impressive wins against the field were enough for him to share first place with Kasparov, with both grandmasters finishing at +4, a full point and a half over the third-place finishers. After this memorial, the sponsor withdrew its support of the tournament, citing turmoil in the chess world and the schism between FIDE and Kasparov as a major factor. Looking over the quality of the games assembled here, though, it's a shame it had to end when it did. The final standings and crosstable are as follows:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 =1 Topalov * 1 0 1 0 1 ½ 1 1 1 6½ =1 Kasparov 0 * ½ 1 1 ½ 1 1 1 ½ 6½ =3 Short 1 ½ * 0 ½ 0 ½ 1 ½ 1 5 =3 Anand 0 0 1 * 1 ½ ½ ½ ½ 1 5 =5 Kramnik 1 0 ½ 0 * ½ 1 ½ ½ ½ 4½ =5 Lautier 0 ½ 1 ½ ½ * 0 1 0 1 4½ 7 Seirawan ½ 0 ½ ½ 0 1 * 0 1 ½ 4 8 Gelfand 0 0 0 ½ ½ 0 1 * 1 ½ 3½ 9 Piket 0 0 ½ ½ ½ 1 0 0 * ½ 3 10 Timman 0 ½ 0 0 ½ 0 ½ ½ ½ * 2½

The 9th Euwe Memorial (1995) was the previous tournament in the series.
