Jun-29-13  Edmontonchessclub: Bruzon won yet again. 5 wins and one draw so far.
Jun-29-13  twinlark: <Edmontonchessclub: Bruzon's live rating should be over 2700 again, with his win last night over GM Hansen.>

Not quite.

That win didn't fully recover the points lost because of his draw against Garcia. His subsequent win against Porper brought him up to 2699.8.

Bruzon has to defeat all 3 of his remaining opponents to reach 2700 and stay there as any draws will drag him back below 2700.

Jun-29-13  Edmontonchessclub: <Twinlark> Thanks.
Jun-30-13  Edmontonchessclub: Bruzon won again in round 7. So did Short.

HeMateMe: Who was the first winner of this event, eight years ago?
Jun-30-13  Doniez: Here you'll find the table with all the winners of previous editions http://www.edmonton-international.c.... By the way, congrats to GM Bruzon, he is now in the 2700 club again after his great performance!
Jun-30-13  Octavia: to draw a game seems to be a great achievement. If I could do that any time, I'd play in strong comps all the time & my grade would go up & up & up.

For a GM to draw against lower rated opposition is bad of course. Therefore in a comp such as this, no top player would draw if s/he could help it. Therefore the 3 - 1 system is unnecessary & insulting on top. Why tell the players how to play?

Jun-30-13  Edmontonchessclub: So the winner of the 1st Edmonton International, in 2006, was IM Peter Vavrak of Slovakia. He is now a GM.
Jun-30-13  Nicocobas: <twinlark> and <Doniez> Is Bruzón back at 2700 or not? Doesn't FIDE (or whatever the proper organization is) consider 2699.8=2700? You've got to be kidding.
Jun-30-13  evlozare: <nicocobas> fide rounds off decimals but edmonton tour is still ongoing hence its results are not yet included in fide july'13 ratings.
Jun-30-13  Edmontonchessclub: Right.
This tournament won't get rated by FIDE until August 1st.
Jun-30-13  Edmontonchessclub: Bruzon's official rating, on the new FIDE rating list, is 2689.
Jul-01-13  twinlark: <Edmontonchessclub>

There were some complications with the ratings in the Zonal that Bruzon won, and this is reflected in his live rating being 2 points less than previously thought. That's why his rating has apparently gone down after his victory against Doroshenko.

The other facts in my previous post are correct and unaffected by this adjustment.

HeMateMe: <Edmontonchessclub> Fine reporting, sir. If I may ask, what do you do when not assisting the ECC? I'm assuming Edmonton chess is not a full time gig.
Jul-01-13  Edmontonchessclub: Bruzon won again in round 8, and clinched 1st place with a round to spare. Short also won.

<Hehateme> Yes, I've got a full time job, nothing to do with chess. But I took vacation time to organize the Edmonton International as a volunteer (with the help of some friends at the Edmonton Chess Club). So I've got plenty of time to report here. I've been a Chessgames.com member since before I started organizing tournaments. It's been my favourite chess website for a long time.

Jul-01-13  parmetd: In round 9, Bruzon the tournament winner has to face the guy in last place... (-5 no less).

... but just to make it fair, Bruzon gets the White pieces.

Check It Out: I smell the makings of a revenge game.
Jul-02-13  Edmontonchessclub: According to Bruzon, Gardner missed a win, too!

Bruzon won the tournament with 7 wins, two draws, zero losses. Certainly the best performance we've had in 8 years of the the Edmonton International.

I want to invite him back next year.

Jul-02-13  twinlark: Seems almost like an honorary Canadian citizen! Won't he be playing in the Canadian Open in a couple of weeks?
Jul-02-13  Edmontonchessclub: Hmmm, Chessgames, please put the last round games up. The pgn is available in the usual place: http://www.edmonton-international.c...
Jul-03-13  Edmontonchessclub: Bruzon also tied for 1st in the blitz tournament (scoring +8).

He gave a simul before the tournament, scoring a perfect 21 wins out of 21 games.

Dec-07-13  Edmontonchessclub: GM Bruzon has just now accepted his invitation to the 9th Edmonton International. He will be back to defend his title June 21-29th, 2014.
Dec-08-13  Shams: <Edmontonchessclub> Nice. Anyone else yet?
Jan-01-14  Edmontonchessclub: Yes. GM Vasil Ivanchuk, GM Wesley So, GM Lazaro Bruzon, GM Sergei Tiviakov and GM Irina Krush are the top players for the 2014 edition of this tournament (June 21-29).
