How Karpov Wins: The Early Years
Compiled by Backward Development
--*--

Of all of the chess books I've encountered, none has helped me as much as Edmar Mednis' "How Karpov Wins". Anatoly's victories leave a strong impression to the student and collector both. The book primarly covers the years 1971-1974, culminating with Karpov's victory over Korchnoi in the Candidates Final match. What the book doesn't cover, however, are Karpov's formative years. I believe these games, while not of the same quality as the later period, give useful insight into the development of this world champion's style and will interest the club player because they show how Karpov dispatched opponents with weaknesses common in club players. All in all, this collection is meant to complement Mednis' work as a 'prequel' of sorts and interest the collector with several unknown masterpieces. Annotations are forthcoming on games without them. So, without further ado...
