Few games from early events survive, so most of these will not be made into their own collections.

1937 championship*
- 24 Apr New York

Rivero x = 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 8 Bain = x 1 = 1 1 1 1 - 1 7 McCready 0 0 x = 0 = 1 1 1 1 5 Slater 0 = = x 1 1 0 1 0 1 5 Raettig 0 0 1 0 x = 1 0 1 1 4.5 White 0 0 = 0 = x 1 1 0 1 4 Davey 0 0 0 1 0 0 x 1 1 0 3 Rogosin 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 x 1 1 3 Weart 0 - 0 1 0 1 0 0 x 0 2 Wray 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 x 2

Davey withdrew after 6 rounds at 3-3 due to illness.

Bain was ill and unable to play her last round against Weart. It was postponed and apparently never played because it would have no effect on the standings.

*There is some difference of opinion regarding the first US woman champion. The 1937 event was sponsored by the National Chess Federation, which would merge with the American Chess Federation in 1939 to form the US Chess Federation. The US championship had been sponsored by the NCF since 1936 and some consider the 1937 women's NCF tournament as a federation and not a national title and therefore deem Karff as the first US woman champion in 1938. Edith Lucie Weart, who often served as both reporter and participant in women's events, was of this opinion at the time, writing:

"A still bigger step is contemplated for next year, for the first time in history of American chess the federation has promised to sponsor a tournament to determine the woman chess champion of the United States." New York Sun, 4/16/1937

Subsequently, many have considered the 1937 event to be the first US women's championship event. The US Chess Federation does list Rivero as the first US woman's champion in 1937.

2002 championship
5-13 Jan Seattle, WA
For the first time, a single mixed-sex 9-round Swiss system event was held to determine both the overall and women's title. Larry Christiansen won the overall event by beating Nick de Firmian in a blitz playoff. Jennifer Shahade was the highest-scoring female and was named US women's champion.

2003 championship
9-18 Jan Seattle, WA

The mixed-sex format from 2002 was repeated, with 58 players in a 9-round Swiss system event (United States Championship (2003)). Alexander Shabalov won the overall event and the title. Anna Hahn won a playoff with Jennifer Shahade and Irina Krush to win the women's title.

2004 championship
17-27 Jun New York, NY

This tournament was the point of some controversy, with some claiming the Anna Hahn win in the 2003 event created an issue for those who wished for a stronger player for the reserve board on the 2004 US women's Olympiad team (e.g., http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt...). Whatever the reasons and motivations, things were not handled in the best manner and Hahn did not participate in this tournament and so did not play on the reserve board on the 2004 Olympiad team.

2005 championship
24 Nov-5 Dec La Jolla, CA

Although played in 2004, this mixed-sex tournament was classified as the 2005 championship (Chessmaster US Championship 2005 (2004)). Hikaru Nakamura won the overall event on tiebreak, and became the 2005 US champion. Rusudan Goletiani won the women's title via a playoff against Tatev Abrahamyan.

2006 championship
2-11 Mar San Diego, CA

This was the last mixed-sex tournament due to changes in sponsorship. There were 64 players in the 9-round Swiss system event (United States Championship (2006)). Anna Zatonskih was the highest-scoring female and was therefore named the US women's champion. Alexander Onischuk won the overall event and became the US champion.

Changes in sponsorship brought back separate women's championships:

2008 -- US Women's Championship (2008)

2009 -- US Women's Chess Championship (2009)
