Horwitz - Williams (1852)
Compiled by MissScarlett

The Chess Player, vol.ii, n.29, 31.01.1852, p.38:

Mr. Williams has lately played two matches at the London Chess Club - one with Mr. Mongredien, and a second with Mr. Medley - in both of which, he bore off the palm of victory. The matches consisted of the first four in seven games, irrespective of draws; with the exception of one draw in each match, Mr. W. won all the games played. This gentleman is now engaged to play a third with Herr Horwitz, the best of thirteen games, which will be commenced immediately at the same club.

The first game was printed the following week, but it's unclear if the match started at the end of January or the start of February.

TCP, 1852.03.13, p.87, reports match situation as +2 -1 =5 in Horwitz's favour.

TCP, 1852.03.20, p.96, reports match situation tied at +2 -2 =6.

ILN, 28.02,1852, p.179:

The contest between Mr Horwitz and Mr Williams consists of what is called "the best of thirteen games;" that is to say, whoever scores seven games first wins the match. We trust that some stipulation has been made to limit the time which each of the combatants may expend upon his move. Without this, Mr Horwitz will play at a disadvantage to which he ought not to be subjected.

The Chess Player, vol.ii, n.43, 08.05.1852, p.150:

<The match between Mr. Williams and Mr. Horwitz has terminated in favour of the former. Seventeen games were played, of which Mr. Williams won five, and Mr. Horwitz three : nine drawn games. Not any of the games exceeded five hours; most of them lasted but two. ... It is to be expected that another match will come off between the same gentlemen.>
