US Open 1984, Fort Worth, TX

Phony Benoni's signature project here at chessgames was the US Open:

Game Collection: US Open Tournament Index

Despite his massive efforts, he was unable to fully build out the full set of collections, partially due to lack of available information but also due to lack of available time. In memory of PB, I have tried to add what I could to one of his smaller collections:

Game Collection: US Open 1984, Fort Worth

The 85th US Open was in Fort Worth, TX on 4-12 Aug 1984 at the Fort Worth Hilton. It was only a nine round event instead of the usual twelve, so there was no rest day. The time control was 50 moves in 150 minutes. There were 518 players and a prize fund of $21,500 USD. I have not seen a full or partial crosstable, and the Dec 1984 issue of <Chess Life> did not list the prize winners.

Roman Dzindzichashvili and Sergey Kudrin tied for first.

With fewer rounds than normal for a US Open, the pressure on the top players to win, particularly in the early rounds, mounted. There would be less time to make up for any early stumbles. Guerevich gave up a draw and Shirazi lost in the third round, and Henley drew in the fourth. Both Browne and Bisguier drew their games in the fifth. Dzindzichashvili beat Denker in the first GM vs GM game of the tournament. Kudrin-Gatlin went 174 moves over three days before Kudrin won. McCambridge was the sole leader after five games. He drew with Browne in the sixth, and Dzindzichashvili won against Guervich to share the lead. Dzindzichashvili squeezed a win against McCambridge in a drawn position in the eighth round to take sole possession of the lead. Browne, Quinteros, Kudrin, Henley, and Bisguier were all a half point back with one game to go. Henley won second prize for best-played game for his win against Dunning: J Dunning vs R Henley, 1984

In the last round, Dzindzichashvili drew against Quinteros, Browne missed a possible win against Henley and drew, and Bisguier turned down a draw offer against Kudrin, only to blunder later.

Our own David Moody was credited along with Jim Marfia for the daily tournament bulletins.
