History

——————————————————————————————————————————
The New Orleans Chess Club.—We are happy to announce that the New Orleans Chess Club is being revived. About forty persons, many of them old members of the club, are about to reorganize it. Among them are many of our most influential citizens, who seem to take much interest in the matter. They are now occupying a room in the Merchants' and Auctioneers' Exchange, Royal street, where, or at the office of Mr. Bendernagel's room, No. 13, any information may be had concerning the organization. We haev visited the rooms and met there many familiar faces with whom, in days gone by, we have passed many a pleasant hour. We, therefore, feel interested in urging the hcess players of our city, more particularly those formerly connected with the club, to add their names to the list of subscribers. The terms of subscription have bben placed at a low figure, to enable all to join who may wish to do so.

This reminds us of the many attempts made here since the war to reestablish the Chess Club which, in the olden time, when Paul Morphy was in his prime, attracted so many players to the club rooms, on Canal street, and exerted so much attantion in the chess circles of the civilized world. There was either, however, not life enough in the individual members, or a sufficient membership, to sustain these post bellum efforts; and ll that is heard now about a Chess Club is an occasional expression of regret by some of the ante bellum organization that the lovers of the noble game cannot once more gather together in one assembly room, and there do obstinate battle in peaceful style, and like good Republicans of the Washington and Jefferson days, exclaim once more: "Check to the King!"
