A chess gathering was held here on the 14th and 15th inst., supported by the Earl of Zetland and several influential people in the neighbourhood. Chas. C. Oxley, Esq., was president, and chess men and books were offered to the successful competitors. Each player played with every other, and the greatest number of games decided the prizes. The Rev. A. B. Skipworth, Bilsdale Parsonage, won all his games, and obtained the first prize—books to the value of nearly £3; Mr. W. Grimshaw, of Whitby, a celebrated chess problem composer, the second prize; and the Rev. Geo. G. Lynn, of Coniscliffe Rectory, and G. F. Bodington, Esq., of Saltburn-by-the-Sea were equal for a third prize. The meeting took place in the large room of the Royal Hotel, and several ladies and gentlemen were present during the play. We are pleased to find the North Riding is to have its annual chess meeting, for chess affords that intellectual exercise which no other game can do. What a course of mathematical training does for the Cambridge man, the same is chess calculated to do for all who wisely and moderately pursue it, specially for the labourer of mechanic. It is intended that the next meeting shall be in the Central Hall, Redcar, and the Earl of Zetland has undertaken to preside. (1)

Chess Meeting at Radcar.—A chess gathering was held, on the 14th and 15th inst., at Redcar, a quiet little watering-place on the Yorkshire coast. Invitations were sent to the West Riding and neighbouring chess clubs, but on account of the very short notice given distant amateurs were unable to attend. The meeting, however, though small, pass off most agreeably. Chas. C. Oxley, Esq., was president; and the following nine gentlemen were competitors for the prizes, consisting of chessmen and chess-books:—Mr. W. Grimshaw, the well-known problem composer; J. H. Bennett, Esq., M.D.; P. Deas, Esq.; Rev. A. B. Skipworth, B.A.; G. F. Bodington, Esq.; W. C. Trevor, Esq.; Rev. Geo. G. Lynn and Rev. W. Beckett, of the Darlington Chess Club, and Rev. B. N. R. Balty, M.A., Redcar. Each competitor played with every other, and the greatest number of games decided the prizes.

1. Rev. A. B. Skipworth 8 games.
2. Mr. W. Grimshaw 6 games and 1 drawn.
3. Rev. Geo. G. Lynn, Mr. G. F. Bodington 5 games and 1 drawn.

This meeting, we are glad to hear, is intended to be the foundation of an annual meeting, and the Earl of Zetland has promised to preside next year. (2)
