The first international chess tournament to be held under Fontys sponsorship (previously the tournament had been sponsored by Interpolis) was a category XVI event conducted in Tilburg, The Netherlands from October 10th to the 23rd. Twelve grandmasters, many of them from the emerging generation of players, participated in the round robin event, including (in order of ELO): Anatoli Karpov (2775), Michael Adams (2685), Alexey Shirov (2685), Boris Gelfand (2665), Judit Polgar (2665), Zoltan Almasi (2655), Peter Svidler (2650), Peter Leko (2630), Joel Lautier (2620), Loek Van Wely (2605), Jeroen Piket (2580), and Emil Sutovsky (2565). The 9th Annual Interpolis Chess Tournament held in Tilburg, the Netherlands in 1985 was a category XV event. The eight participants of the double round robin were (in order of ELO): Jan Timman (2640), Viktor Korchnoi (2630), Robert Huebner (2620), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2615), Lev Polugaevsky (2600), Oleg Romanishin (2590), Roman Dzindzichashvili (2570), and the previous year's winner, Anthony Miles (2560). This year marked the shift in the Interpolis event at Tilburg from a round robin to a double round robin. It was during the third round game against Romanishin that Miles began to suffer extreme back pain. He was forced to take powerful painkillers and lie flat on a massage table during his games in order to participate in the remaining rounds. However, this didn't stop Miles from winning his second title in a row, sharing it this time with Korchnoi and Huebner. In one of the most impressive tournament performances of all time, Kasparov dominated the field of top grandmasters as if it were an exhibition. He scored 10 wins and 4 draws for a total of 12 points out of 14 possible, finishing 3.5 points over second place Korchnoi and 5 points over shared third! It was a triumph few world champions would ever display while crowned, and it was a feat surpassed only by Anatoli Karpov's amazing victory at Linares five years later. The participants were Anatoli Karpov, Ulf Andersson, Boris Spassky, Robert Huebner, Ljubomir Ljubojevic, Lajos Portisch, and Lubomir Kavalek. Unfortunately, due to illness, Huebner was forced to withdraw after the seventh round, and his schedule was expunged from the second cycle of games.
