Magnus Carlsen declined to defend his title and so the world championship is between the winner of the 2022 FIDE Candidates tournament, Ian Nepomniachtchi (age: 32 years) from Russia, and the runner-up Ding Liren (age: 30 years) from China. Nepomniachtchi scored +5 -0 =9 while Ding scored +4 -2 =8 in the tournament against a field consisting of Teimour Radjabov (AZE), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Fabiano Caruana (USA), Alireza Firouzja (IRN), Richard Rapport (HUN), and Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL). Nepomniachtchi previously lost to Magnus Carlsen in the 2021 World Championship. The present match will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan from April 9 to April 30 and will consist of 14 games, plus tiebreaks if required.

Ding Liren of China (age: 32) seeks to defend the title from his opponent Gukesh Dommaraju of India (age: 18). Ding previously successfully defended his title against the Russian challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi (age: 32, at the time) winning the match in game four of rapid tiebreaks. Gukesh became the challenger by winning the 2024 Candidates Tournament with a score of 9/14 over a field which included Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Ian Nepomniachtchi (RUS), Fabiano Caruana (USA), Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa (IND), Vidit Gujrathi (IND), Alireza Firouzja (FRA), and Nijat Abasov (AZE). The match will take place from November 25 to December 13 in Sentosa, Singapore. It will consist of fourteen classical games, with rapid and blitz tiebreaks if necessary.
